The Department of Human Resources is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Associate Director, Talent Management.

Reporting to the Director, Organizational Development and ALA (Academic Leadership Academy), the Associate Director of Talent Management will be responsible for developing and executing upstream strategic initiatives in Talent Development and Talent Acquisition. Creative, purposeful, and future-focused, this role will lead a small team to attract, develop, and retain top talent, ensuring that the university has the skills and leadership capabilities to achieve its strategic objectives. The position will also have individual projects and accountabilities related to the successful achievement of the Ahead of Tomorrow strategic plan in creating a positive workplace culture, attracting, retaining, and developing employees throughout their UCalgary careers. A fast-paced environment and a high-performing team, this position navigates relationships, complexities, and many strategic priorities. A service-oriented team, knowledge, and savvy in understanding academics and collective agreements, working under tight timelines and achieving high expectations are paramount. This role will work closely with other HR Associate Directors to ensure quality services and solutions are seamlessly implemented and operationalized.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Work closely and collaboratively with the Director in leading the direction of the Talent Management team including strategic planning, establishment of practices/processes and establishment of goals and objectives alignment with HR and institutional priorities
  • Ensure effective policies, procedures, systems, and best practices are followed
  • Develop the team's competencies, skills and knowledge including recommending best practices
  • Act as a coach/mentor in the training and development of team members; ensuring the team develops collegial, positive, high trust working relationships
  • Lead and promote Talent Management initiatives and programs at the University
  • Support and guide the team including identifying development and experiential learning opportunities
  • Manage the allocation of personnel to tasks and special assignments and provide staff with advice and support on policies and procedures, client management, priorities, and methods.
  • Monitor and maintain customer satisfaction and identify and address service delivery performance gaps
  • Proactively resource, select, train, manage, support, and evaluate staff; provide feedback and development opportunities; coach the performance of individuals to achieve continuous improvement; stimulate and support creativity and innovation in others through strong leadership
  • Ensure that appropriate reporting tools, processes, and policies to support team accountabilities are in place
  • Ensure the allocation of time, flow of information, and priorities are efficiently balanced for self and staff
  • Develop consistent measures, competencies, and expectations to assess and develop the team
  • Support the team in fostering and building collaborative, supportive relationships and providing high-level customer service
  • Lead projects within the Talent Management function pertaining to the Ahead of Tomorrow operations plan:
    • Provide leadership and subject matter expertise on the multi-year Employee Engagement Survey implementation and action planning
    • Oversee the multi-year Performance Management review and redesign
    • Conduct research, environmental (U15) scan to assess Professional Development across the country and develop organizational project plan
  • Work closely and collaboratively with other HR departments to design and deliver solutions
  • Lead multifunctional projects within HR and represent HR on projects external to HR including institutional projects
  • Demonstrate an awareness of key drivers for decision-making in the University and attain 'buy-in' of key stakeholders to change initiatives
  • Proactively monitor emerging trends by utilizing data & analytics and leveraging relationships for critical insight and perspectives
  • Clearly define the competencies, expectations, and accountabilities of the Talent Management team
  • Represent Talent Management in meetings and presentations as required with Senior and/or Executive leaders
  • Ensure that communications are timely, informative, and appropriately represent Human Resources and the University
  • Provide opinions and advice when sought that are considered appropriate and reliable
  • Proactively develop and maintain trustworthy, productive, problem-solving working relationships with colleagues and staff, across the University community
  • Coach and inspire staff, team, and project members to develop positive, high trust working relationships and operate effectively as a team
  • Create an environment where knowledge sharing, support, training tools, coaching and staff development ensure service levels meet or exceed client expectations.
  • All other requirements as required by the Director, Organizational Development and ALA

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field with a minimum of 8-10 years of progressively senior experience in all areas of talent management, including performance management, talent acquisition, learning and development, succession planning, organizational development and employee engagement
  • 3+ years of management/leadership experience within Human Resources, leading a talent management team
  • Excellent project management skills
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Experience in Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility is considered an asset
  • Solution-oriented with demonstrated ability to collaborate and build strong relationships with key stakeholders, peers, and team members
  • Coaching, facilitation and presentation skills and experience
  • Strong analytical and interpretive skills to recognize and comprehend complex issues, policies, regulatory requirements and external or internal information affecting client's environment
  • CPHR (Chartered Professionals in Human Resources) designation is an asset
  • Ability to think logically, solve problems and be critically objective with an ability to develop innovative solutions to problems and de-escalate complex or sensitive situations
  • Sound consulting and business partnering skills including negotiating and influencing, change management, coaching and mentoring, decision making, problem solving and client relationship development
  • Ability to work independently and interact with various levels of management in a multi-tasking, deadline-oriented team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others and to handle difficult situations while maintaining effective and productive working relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and support projects and initiatives
  • Highly effective team leadership skills are required to build, engage, motivate and develop all team members to their greatest ability
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and written communication skills are required
  • Advanced level computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, learning technologies, PeopleSoft or other HRIS.
