Reporting to the Director, International Affairs, the Coordinator, Global Engagement and Mobility supports the implementation of the Academic Plan and the Internationalization Strategy at Algoma University. The core function of this position is to coordinate student, faculty, and staff mobility programs and projects run by the International Affairs department. This includes study abroad (incoming and outgoing), short-term mobility programs, Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), and virtual exchange. In addition, the Coordinator, Global Engagement and Mobility supports internationalization-at-home initiatives, as well as international experiential learning including co-op education, internships, and volunteer work abroad. The Coordinator, Global Engagement and Mobility supports students on a one-on-one or group basis around applications, nominations, advising, on-boarding, and pre-departure training for mobility programs. The Coordinator, Global Engagement and Mobility is responsible for strengthening and expanding Algoma University’s international activities through global partner, employer, and community-based networks, and by promoting the benefits of global experiences to the Algoma University community. The Coordinator, Global Engagement and Mobility will have a particular focus on meeting the needs of vulnerable and diverse groups, including Indigenous, racialized, and 2SLGTBTQ+ students, and assisting them in accessing and navigating global mobility opportunities. The Coordinator, Global Engagement and Mobility will be located primarily on the Sault Ste. Marie campus, with occasional travel requirements to other campus sites.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. International Mobility (60%)

● Develop, coordinate, and evaluate a wide range of international mobility opportunities for students, staff, and faculty.
● Coordinate all aspects of mobility programs including inquiries, promotions, recruitment, nomination, selection, admission, academic advising, registration, health insurance, financial aid, VISA requirements, and post-entry advising.
● Coordinate all aspects of externally funded mobility projects (e.g., Global Learning Leadership Skills Development Program).
● Coordinate all aspects of Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) and virtual exchange in collaboration with faculty and supporting departments.
● Develop resources, procedures, and training to support mobility program orientation, pre-departure, and post-entry reflection.
● Provide upper-year academic advising for transfer credit assessment for students returning from study abroad, in collaboration with the faculty advisor.
● Recruit, train, and supervise student volunteer groups related to mobility initiatives.
● Liaise with international partners to facilitate mobility opportunities.
● Welcome and onboard incoming exchange students, visiting students and faculty, and scholars.
● Create and maintain records to track international mobility activity.
● Provide information on and assist the university community in accessing and applying for scholarship and funding programs (e.g., offered through Global Affairs Canada).
● Implement best practices, policies, and procedures in risk management mitigation.
● Assist with the creation, organization, and tracking of Algoma University’s international MOUs and exchange agreements.
● Conduct partner site visits, when required.

B. International Learning at Home (20%)

  • Organize events and opportunities to promote internationalization.
  • Coordinate intercultural competency development and assessment across campus, ensuring its inclusion in pre-departure training and preparation for international experiential learning.
  • Develop and facilitate training on cultural safety, intercultural competency development, and cross-cultural communication to students, faculty, and staff across all campuses of the university.
  • Identify and pursue funding for internationalization-at-home initiatives.
  • Explore and foster relationships with international and out-of-province partners to further internationalization-at-home initiatives.

C. International Experiential Learning (20%)

● Develop and administer a wide range of international experiential learning opportunities.
● Develop, coordinate, market, deliver, and evaluate student-centered support programs and services that encourage and enable students to participate in international experiential learning as part of their degree.
● Serve as the initial and central coordinating contact for students participating in global experiential learning and employment programs.
● Create, update, and maintain records of international contacts to support a variety of activities, including tracking relationship management, leads, and new partners.
● Collaborate and consult with other units on campus and externally to facilitate and promote successful opportunities for students abroad.
● Create, administer, and deliver pre-departure and re-entry programs for outbound students, including risk management protocols.
● Working closely with Coop Coordinators and faculty, assist in the development of learning experiences to ensure international experiential learning is intentional, learning outcomes are met, and results are shared with the broader community.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Physical Effort – Minimal
Position requires some lifting/physical effort required for workshop set up and take down. The majority of time is spent sitting at a computer workstation or meeting with students.

Sensory Attention – Moderate
Moderate need for detailed/precise work to be completed while accommodating regular interruptions. High attention to detail is required when assembling data and completing program evaluations.

Mental Stress – Moderate
Work activities are performed with occasional exposure to one or more mental pressures but the stress would not be noticeably disruptive to the work nor result in unpleasant reactions (e.g., normal deadlines, client interactions, repetitive work). There may be multiple simultaneous deadlines given the front-line nature of the work. Flexibility is needed to work across different time zones and out of hours as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

● Undergraduate degree in any field, and three (3) years of experience in a
post-secondary environment, preferably with an emphasis on international
programs/mobility, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, is required.
● Formal education or training in international education, intercultural communication, or a related field is preferred (e.g., graduate degree, continuing education courses, or other professional development).
● Experience working in a professional capacity internationally or experience with international travel, volunteerism, or study are strong assets.
● Experience working with Indigenous culture and communities.
● Experience with program development and evaluation.
● Previous workshop development and facilitation experience with an understanding of adult learning principles.
● Skills required for the position:
○ Well-developed coaching and active/reflective listening skills with an awareness of the challenges and barriers to participation often faced by international students, Indigenous students, racialized students, 2SLGBTQQIAP+, and students with accessibility and mental health concerns.
○ Strong ability to deal with ambiguity and multitask.
○ Professionalism, diplomacy, and the ability to interface effectively at all levels of the university with a diverse student population.
○ Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills with a capacity to develop, curate, and share content for print, digital, and social media channels.
○ Strong ability to work collaboratively as a member of a dynamic team.
○ Demonstrated capacity to model flexibility/adaptability.
○ Proven ability to work effectively with students or clients.

○ Excellent interpersonal skills to collaborate and build relationships with key members of the internal and external AU community.

Salary Scale: $58,996 to $73,745 annually
