The North York Women's Shelter Board is seeking 3-4 new members of our Board of Directors who bring experience, interest and expertise related to intersectional feminist practice and ending gender-based violence.
The North York Woman's Shelter ("NYWS") is an emergency GBV shelter which provides safe refuge for Women identified folks and their children. NYWS provides woman, trans & non-binary individuals and their children with the support and resources they need to get their lives back on track after leaving a violent relationship. NYWS is a feminist organization which operates from an integrated anti-racist, anti-oppression (“ARAO”) framework.
The NYWS Board is currently seeking 3-4 new members of the Board of Directors, who have a strong commitment to intersectional feminist practice and bring experience as well as expertise in one of the following areas:
- Legal
- Program Planning and Evaluation
- Financial Management / Accounting / Audit / Compliance
- Strategic Planning and Management
We encourage applications from woman who reflect the diversity of the community we serve, including but not limited to survivors of violence, Black women, Racialized women, Indigenous women, women Identified- members of the 2SLGBTQI+ community, women with disabilities, retired (senior) women, women of all ages (18+) and women representing the range of socio-economic realities in our community.
Responsibilities:
- Promote the work and activities of the Shelter within the community.
- Support NYWS Strategic Plan goals of developing transitional housing services.
- Attend monthly scheduled Board meetings to discuss and share information/feedback.
- Act as an ambassador and represent the Shelter at community events.
- Participate in one of the standing committees and contribute through committee work.
- Mandatory attendance of the Annual General Meeting.
Expertise:
- Fundraising / Capital Campaigns / Marketing / Public Relations
- Transitional Housing programs and services
- Superior networking skills and extensive network of contacts
Requirements:
- Experience in the not-for-profit sector or a willingness to learn
- Superior networking skills with extensive network of contacts
- Progressive values and a commitment to social justice
- Anti-racism/anti-oppression education and practice
- Demonstrated evidence of community involvement
- Commitment to harm-reduction/sex-positivity
