Requirements and Nature of Work:

- Lead the organization of at least 12 1-hour seminars (i.e.,bi-weekly) during the fall and winter semesters. Tasks include:

  • Soliciting speakers, which can include a mix of (1) PhD students in the Institute of Environment doctoral program, (2) scholars, both from within the University of Ottawa community as well as beyond, and (3) practitioners in government, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector.
  • To ensure that invited speakers reflect the interests of PhD students, conduct a survey of PhD students to ask about interests and candidate speakers.
  • Being physically present at all in-person seminars, to lead set-up and. Being present at all remote seminars, to send invites and coordinate technology. Moderating seminars where appropriate. The mix of in-person, hybrid, and remote seminars will be determined in consultation with students (through a survey) and the Institute of Environment Director. At minimum 4 seminars per semester (1/month) will be held in person.

- Promote the seminars on the Institute of the Environment social media accounts. Liaise with academic administrators to promote seminars on the IE website.

- Other tasks as necessary.

Requirements:

  • The successful candidate will be a PhD student in 2nd year or above in the Institute of Environment doctoral program.
  • The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate relevant experience and interest in organizing the seminar.
  • Priority will be granted to candidates to whom the university has a financial obligation.
