Algoma University invites applications for the inaugural position of Associate Vice-President, Research and Graduate Studies.

Algoma University campuses are located on the traditional lands of the Anishinaabek, the Mississaugas of the Credit, and the Mushkegowuk Cree, as well as hereditary lands of the Métis Nation. Algoma University was originally established in Sault Ste. Marie in 1965 as Algoma University College and became an independent University in 2008. Algoma is a growing and innovative institution with a dual Special Mission to serve as a teaching-oriented university while cultivating cross-cultural learning between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. The University currently provides students with rich learning and research opportunities in a range of liberal arts, sciences and professional disciplines. The University offers countless opportunities for students to learn inside and outside of the classroom. Experiential learning and student research opportunities are critical elements of Algoma’s approach, helping students apply what they learn in “real world” settings.

With campuses located in Sault Ste. Marie, Brampton and Timmins, the tri-campus model that has emerged at Algoma University leverages the unique strengths, opportunities and broader community needs of each geographic location.

The Opportunity

Based at either the Sault Ste. Marie campus or the Brampton campus and reporting to the Vice-President Academic & Research (VPAR), the Associate Vice-President, Research and Graduate Studies (AVP-RGS) plays a key role in advancing novel and innovative research, fostering excellence in graduate and postdoctoral education, developing, maintaining, and implementing research and graduate studies policies and procedures, and providing guidance for community-based research and graduate programs. The AVP-RGS also fosters institutional relationships with granting councils, government agencies, research institutes, centres, and foundations, as well as industry and community partners to advance the objectives of the Algoma University Research Strategic Plan and institutional Strategic and Academic Plans. The AVP-RGS will work with the Manager, Academic & Research to establish goals and to ensure the realization of all objectives related to commercialization and industry partnerships in the strategic research planning documents. Furthermore, the AVP-RGS will work collaboratively with the Associate Vice-President, Academic & Continuing Education (AVP-ACE), the Office of the Registrar, Faculty Deans, and Student Success & Wellbeing to ensure the optimal functioning of graduate programs, optimal support for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and to identify and facilitate the design, development, and implementation of new graduate programming with faculty.

The Ideal Candidate

As the ideal candidate you hold a doctoral degree in a discipline existent at Algoma University and tenured status at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. You have progressive academic leadership experience with a distinguished academic background, including a strong portfolio of achievements in research with a record of promoting research and scholarship, and familiarity and experience with graduate programs.

You are a transparent administrative leader who promotes an environment of collaboration, consultation and respect. You have a deep commitment to excellence in research and graduate level teaching and learning, and support faculty in maintaining and advancing a culture of innovation and excellence in research and graduate programming. You value the unique benefits of a small university setting, of direct student-to-faculty access, and of educational programming that supports the growth and success of Indigenous learners. You have experience engaging and working with Indigenous communities, and with proven understanding and appreciation of Indigenous ways of knowing and being. You have a strong commitment to increasing accessibility, equity, and diversity, and the ability to maintain an inclusive climate that reflects the University’s goals related to equity, diversity, inclusion, and reconciliation. You value relationships within, across, and outside the University and actively build and maintain relationships that support University and community goals. You can articulate a clear vision, set challenging goals and objectives and inspire the University community to achieve them.
