Junior Urban Designer

Brook McIlroy is seeking a talented Junior Urban Designer to join our Toronto Urban Design & Planning studio. This role is ideal for a graduate of an urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, or planning post-secondary program, with 1-2 years of demonstrated experience working at an urban scale. The successful candidate will become part of a highly collaborative and diverse team, with opportunities to work on a range of urban design and planning projects.

Candidates will exhibit exceptional graphic proficiency, have a keen attention to detail, and demonstrate strong writing skills.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Assist a multidisciplinary team of architects, landscape architects, designers, and planners on urban design and planning projects, including:
  2. Urban Design Projects and Studies: Coordination and production of Campus Plans, Downtown Plans, Waterfront Plans, Corridor Plans, Mobility Hubs, Community Plans, Urban Design Guidelines, Comprehensive Plans, Peer Reviews, GFA/FSI calculations, and density test-fit analyses.
  3. Planning and Urban Design Reports for Development: Preparation of Urban Design Briefs, Community Services and Facilities Studies, Block Context Plans, Sun/Shadow Studies, Draft Plans of Subdivision, and other planning documents.
  4. Engagement Activities: Coordination, preparation of materials for, and attendance at, public workshops, client meetings, external and internal workshops and design charettes, Council meetings, and engagement activities.
  5. Proposals: Preparation of proposals in response to RFQs and RFPs.
  6. Studio Support: Support other project work within the studios as needed, including graphics preparation, mapping, renderings, analysis, document layouts and preparation, and writing.
Quality Assurance & Quality Checks
  1. Keep organized and check work for accuracy, omissions and legibility.
  2. Check deliverables for AODA compliance.

Qualifications
  1. A bachelor’s or master’s degree in urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, or planning at a qualified post-secondary institution and a minimum of 1-2 years of experience delivering urban design or planning projects in a professional setting.
  2. An interest and/or experience in architecture, landscape architecture, planning, public engagement, and sustainable urban development.
  3. Exceptional writing and document layout skills.
  4. Strong analytical and organizational skills with attention to detail.
  5. Motivated, flexible and enthusiastic team player able to work in an open studio format.
  6. Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, AutoCAD, Sketchup, MS Office applications, and 3D modeling.
Value Add:
  1. Experience with/interest in working with Indigenous and other diverse communities.
  2. Experience working with processing and analyzing geodata/knowledge of GIS software.
  3. Experience with/interest in engagement, including multimedia engagement tools (e.g. Mentimeter, Miro, Zoom/Teams engagement tools) and knowledge of IAP2 principles.
  4. Familiarity with the AODA and other relevant universal design and accessibility standards.
  5. Knowledge of sustainable design standards/possession of or working toward sustainable design certification.
  6. Eligibility to become a member in OPPI, and/or other professional organizations in the field of urban design and/or planning.
  7. Possession of a valid Ontario driver’s license.
