Reporting directly to the President with oversight from the Board of Governors, the Governance Officer is accountable for advancing wise and best practices of governance throughout the institution which includes developing and maintaining governance guiding documents and policies, contributing to the implementation and ongoing success of governance-related institutional initiatives, ensuring, and facilitating the effective recruitment of Board and committee members, and contributing to Board business and operational planning. The Governance Officer provides leadership and professional support, with a high level of confidentiality, to the governing bodies and their committees, and acts as a resource for internal and external stakeholders on FNUniv governance-related matters. The Governance Officer will ensure that governing bodies are acting in accordance with guiding documents – policies and processes.

Duties:

  • Manages and coordinates all aspects of the Board of Governors and its committee meetings including events in alignment with the First Nations University of Canada Regulations and Policies.
  • Advises on agenda requirements, meeting organization, formation for recommendations and motions, appropriate follow-up actions, methods of consultation with stakeholders.
  • Distributes communication of all relevant information across the University as it relates to decisions made by the governing bodies.
  • Ensures the Board of Governors documentation is kept up to date and includes all materials required by law such as letters patent, articles of incorporation, annual return, board and committee meeting minutes, financial minutes, and any other official records for the institution.
  • Works with Elders to coordinate and adhere to culture protocols for Cultural Ceremonies for the Board.
  • Develops project work plans, including milestones and deadlines, that align with the annual calendars of the governing bodies and office workflows, and monitors progress toward desired outcomes.
  • Responsible for special projects and events including governance reviews, award nominations, policy reviews, retreats, events, and initiatives designed to foster communication and collaboration.
  • Facilitates and directs the creation of consistent University policies and procedures and ensures their regular review and revisions in alignment with the Governance Policy.

Qualifications:

Education

  • The successful candidate will possess an undergraduate degree in a related field (law, business administration, economics, and public policy). A minimum of 8 years progressive experience in managing the work of committees or large working groups, preferably in a university environment. An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
