Job Description The Senior Distribution Engineer plays a key role in delivering electrical utility infrastructure projects within a fast-growing engineering consulting environment. This full-time position is part of our Utilities Division based in New Westminster, BC, and focuses on the design and review of overhead and underground distribution systems, quality assurance, and acting as Professional of Record (POR) on projects. The role involves close collaboration with utility clients and project stakeholders, and is ideal for an experienced engineer who takes ownership, is career-motivated, well organized, detail oriented, and committed to meeting deadlines.

  • Degree in Engineering from a Canadian accredited university or equivalent.
  • Current P.Eng. with a Canadian Engineering Association
  • A minimum of eight (8) years in underground (UG) and/or overhead (OH) electrical design experience on BC Hydro projects (other North American electric utility’s project experience will be considered in combination with BC Hydro project experience).
  • A valid Class 5 BC driver's license (or equivalent from another Canadian Province)
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Proficient using MS Office and AutoCAD software

Essential Skills

  • Degree in Engineering from a Canadian accredited university or equivalent.

  • Experience with PLS-CADD for overhead line design and pole analysis is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Design overhead electrical infrastructure as the primary responsibility and underground electrical infrastructure as a secondary responsibility in accordance with BC Hydro standards and requirements.
  • Use SPIDAcalc non-linear pole line and PLS-CADD analysis tools to evaluate pole designs and develop non-standard overhead line design solutions.
  • Apply underground cable pulling calculation software to verify and confirm underground design solutions.
  • Use load balancing and fuse coordination software to support distribution system improvement projects.
  • Fulfill Professional of Record (POR) responsibilities for non-standard and engineered design solutions, ensuring technical accuracy and compliance.
  • Adhere to Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC) bylaws, including continuing education requirements and Quality Management Guidelines.
  • Prepare comprehensive design packages for review and submission, including Non-Standard Pole Replacement, LPT/PMT/Livefront/service box/URD, feeder design, customer-driven third-party attachments, automation, system improvement (SI), and other BC Hydro programs or client projects.
  • Check and review the design work of peers to ensure quality, consistency, and adherence to standards.
  • Prepare issue-for-construction packages that clearly communicate design intent and construction requirements.
  • Coordinate effectively with clients, co-workers, subcontractors, regulatory authorities, and other stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Attend project meetings and conduct site inspections and reviews to validate designs and support field implementation.
  • Provide technical and escalation support during all phases of a project, from concept through construction and closeout.
  • Mentor designers and Engineers-in-Training (EITs), supporting their professional development and technical growth.
  • Perform other engineering and project-related tasks as required by leadership to support successful project delivery.
