Westpower is seeking an experienced Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Specialist to provide practical HSE support across our Alberta operations (Calgary / Edmonton / Grand Prairie / Site).

The HSE Specialist will work closely with employees, supervisors and management to support the implementation and ongoing improvement of Westpower’s HSE programs, promote a strong safety culture and help ensure compliance with applicable regulatory and company requirements.

This is a hands-on position requiring a regular presence at Westpower locations throughout Alberta. The role will also support Westpower’s Certificate of Recognition (COR) program through the Manufacturers’ Health & Safety Association (MHSA).

Education, Skills & Experience

  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety or a related discipline is preferred; equivalent education and experience will be considered.
  • 3 to 5 years of practical HSE experience, preferably within manufacturing, industrial, mechanical service or similar operations.
  • Experience with Alberta COR and MHSA requirements, including COR audits and ongoing program maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of Alberta occupational health and safety legislation.
  • Experience with workplace inspections, hazard and risk assessments, incident investigations and HSE program development
  • Experience delivering safety training, orientations or toolbox meetings.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with employees and management at all levels.
  • Ability to work independently and provide practical solutions to workplace HSE issues.
  • CRSP or CRST designation is considered an asset.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel frequently throughout Alberta and occasionally to the United States.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide frontline HSE guidance, coaching and support to employees, supervisors and managers.
  • Support the implementation and maintenance of Westpower HSE policies, procedures and programs .
  • Conduct workplace inspections, observations, audits and risk assessments and support the timely completion of corrective actions.
  • Support the development and review of hazard assessments, JHAs, Safe Work Practices and Safe Job Procedures.
  • Lead or support incident and near-miss investigations and assist with identifying and implementing effective corrective actions.
  • Participate in client meetings.
  • Develop and deliver HSE orientations, training, toolbox meetings and safety communications.
  • Support Westpower’s MHSA COR program, including internal audit activities, external audit preparation, documentation and corrective actions.
  • Support Joint Health and Safety Committees and worker participation in HSE activities.
  • Monitor HSE performance, identify trends and communicate opportunities for improvement to operational and HSE leadership
  • Support contractor HSE compliance and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain accurate HSE records and documentation.
  • Maintain a regular presence at Westpower locations and work collaboratively with operational teams to continually improve HSE performance.
  • Perform other HSE related duties as required.
