Laboratory Technician 1 - REL Reporting to the Lab Supervisor under the functional supervision of the Lab Group Leader, the incumbent will: - Set up and carry out assigned water, wastewater, sludge, or soil analysis for monitoring and enforcement purposes in accordance with the Canadian Association for Laboratory Accreditation 9CALAISO 17025) and the Ontario Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks Drinking Water License (Safe Drinking Water Act)- Maintain accurate and organized laboratory records, including data entry and data review- Prepare quality control and calibration standards, reagents and media- Store, handle and quantify inventory of chemicals and supplies- Utilize a variety of laboratory equipment - Assist with monitoring, evaluating, and updating laboratory quality control and assurance practices, as related to assigned testing- Maintain safety awareness and abide by safe laboratory practices and policies- Demonstrate professionalism through humility, respect, and responsiveness to a diverse workforce The successful candidate will possess: - A three-year post-secondary program specializing in the Sciences/Environmental Technology or a related discipline- Registration or be eligible for registration as a Technologist with O.A.C.E.T.T. or equivalent- Some relevant and related laboratory experience- Knowledge and understanding of instrument operation with minimal troubleshooting, Good Lab Practices (GLP), Quality Assurance/Quality Control in an analytical lab and WHMIS- Familiarity with Microsoft Office software applications (Word, Excel) and Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)- The ability to work independently and in a team environment with minimal supervision- Effective customer service, organization and verbal and written communication skills- A valid class 'G' Ontario Driver's Licence CUPE 1764 Salary Grade 5 This position is with Salary Grade 5 and will be paid at the following hourly rates:- Start: $40.13 - Six Month: $42.36 - Job: $44.59 Conditions of Employment All applicants are expected to comply with the Region of Durham's Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct Policies throughout the recruitment process.
