Interim Controller

Reports to: Vice President Finance

Duration: 4-6 Months

Location: GTA and surrounding areas


Our client is the Canadian arm of a large global company that is in urgent need of an Interim Controller during a transitional period. This strategic interim assignment will call for the finance leader to lead and mentor a close-knit experienced team. The Interim leader will be accountable for overseeing all financial procedures, controls, reporting, systems, and preparation of stand alone audited financial statements. The ideal candidate will support the attainment of the overall strategic business objectives in a rapidly growing organization and will ensure the accuracy and timeliness of financial results for a material component of a private company prepared under ASPE.


Key Accountabilities:

  • Assist the accounting department with ongoing daily activities ensuring timelines and deadlines for accounting cycle are met;
  • Advise on internal control procedures to ensure that accounting activities are in accordance with GAAP/IFRS and company policies;
  • Preparing and inputting various journal entries (i.e., prepaid expense allocation, IT, and insurance accruals, etc.) into the appropriate systems;
  • Prepare G/L account reconciliations to ensure accurate reporting of transactions;
  • Assisting accountants with percentage of completion calculations monthly as required;
  • Monthly reconciliation of project costing and general ledger transactions;
  • Cash forecasting on a daily basis;
  • Assembly and preparation of weekly pay for group vendors and trade AP;
  • Overseeing the monthly inputting of job information into appropriate system as required and providing information to VP, Finance and HR for the consolidation of overheads;
  • Review of intercompany invoices as required;
  • Review intercompany transactions/schedule on an as needed basis;
  • Backup or review for quarterly intercompany transactions;
  • Review fixed assets purchases, disposals, and continuity schedule as required;
  • Review of withholding tax and non-resident tax as required;
  • Annual budgeting and quarterly forecasting as required;
  • Quarterly performance share and internal performance share journal entries;
  • Review of internal performance schedules and communications prepared by Accountant as required;
  • Performing credit checks and credit authorizations as required;
  • Reviewing credit applications to vendors as required;
  • Quarterly corporate environmental reporting in November and updating internal schedules as time permits throughout the year;
  • Assistance with annual internal control report;
  • Backup and assist accounting team as required and review other work/transactions not listed above;
  • Ad hoc reporting requested by management as required;
  • Review bank reconciliations monthly.


Competencies and Requirements:

  • 5+ years of team supervision experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and/or 10 + of work experience. Accounting designation a definite asset.
  • Strong ERP systems experience with preference for Oracle and/or SAP
  • Knowledge of Harmony or Maestro a definite asset.
  • Experience with WIP and POC a definite asset.
  • ASPE and IFRS experience.
  • Experience managing relationships and payments with group vendors and trade AP.
  • Strength in intercompany transactions.
  • Experience in manufacturing or construction industry.
  • Excellent communication, organization, coaching, and mentoring skills.
  • Problem-solving, decision-making, and critical thinking abilities.
  • Team player with a focus on continuous improvement and innovation.
