Operations Manager

SNOLAB is an international facility for world-class underground physics research and has an expanding programme in astroparticle physics and underground science. Located in an air-conditioned clean room 2 km underground in the Vale Creighton Mine near Sudbury Ontario, with a suite of surface facilities and laboratories, SNOLAB is currently preparing for the next generation of experiments focusing on neutrino studies and the search for galactic dark matter.
The PositionThe Operations Manager is responsible for the maintenance and performance of the SNOLAB infrastructure, both surface and underground, as well as any experimental plants and processes assigned by the SNOLAB Director of Operations. She/he manages all aspects of the functioning of the facility including the operation of plants and equipment, materials handling and cleaning, warehouse, shipping and materials logistics, scheduling, and coordination with other stakeholders.
· Safe and effective management and operation of systems plants and equipment as assigned by the Director of Operations, including but not limited to:
o HVAC;
o Chilled water system;
o Fire protection systems;
o Building Automation System;
o UPW Plant;
o Scintillator Plant;
o Cryogenic Plants;
o Other SNOLAB or experiments equipment, plants, or systems as assigned.
· Management of the SNOLAB logistics processes for receiving and moving material underground and on surface;
· Liaising with Vale for ongoing operational requirements;
· Management of the Operations staff and other assigned staff, including training, scheduling, and implementation of the SNOLAB-USWA collective agreement;
· Manage the department budget;
· Participate in or chair technical, hazards, and projects reviews;
· Report at management meetings and at scientific collaboration meetings, and produce presentations, analysis and written reports as required;
· To develop, in consultation, the learning and development requirements of SNOLAB staff members that reporting to the role; Through the SNOLAB ASR process, to monitor staff objectives and development plans;
· To ensure the health and safety of all SNOLAB staff and users through vigilance, and dissemination and adherence to SNOLAB health and safety policies and procedures; To implement corrective actions for any non-conformance against these policies;
· Participating in MOL, TSSA and other regulatory body inspections and/or site visits;
· To maintain quality management through the implementation and dissemination of SNOLAB policies and procedures; To implement corrective actions for any non-conformance against these policies;
· Support and promulgate the core values of SNOLAB as defined in the Strategic Plan;
· A B.Eng. or B.S. Degree in a relevant engineering or science discipline
· Certified as a Professional Engineer of Ontario or eligible for P.Eng. registration an asset
Experience:
· Strong knowledge of typical facility infrastructure and installations
· Knowledge of human resource management and supervisory techniques
· Knowledge of process, electrical, and building codes applicable in Ontario
· Ability to effectively use computing tools and processes such as asset management systems, office applications, MS project, SharePoint and related applications and technologies such as BI-Automate
Salary Range
Salary will be determined by qualifications and experience and includes an attractive benefits package. Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with SNOLAB policies.
