We invite you to consider a unique opportunity as an Industrial Approvals Engineer with the Government of Alberta. 

The Industrial Approvals Engineer is responsible for the technical review and preparation of approvals, registrations, and authorizations under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA). In this position, you will recommend limits and monitoring requirements for the control and management of substance releases into the environment. You will represent the region/department at public hearings and appeals, on internal/external committees and provides information and advice to assist and expedite compliance and abatement activities. 

This position provides insight to industry and the public, and provides direction to industrial and consulting clients during normal and emergency situations. It involves extensive meetings and liaison with clients and stakeholders, and requires knowledge of diverse disciplines, good professional practices, and effective interpersonal skills.

As an Industrial Approvals Engineer, you will:

Provide technical review of approval applications and registration submissions and Statements of Concern to assess/confirm the environmental impact/potential impact of materials generated by the activity and industry proposed actions to address substance releases. Coordinate input from internal and external specialists in air, water, soil, noise, groundwater to determine impacts on various environmental media.  Research scientific literature and practices within other jurisdictions to develop approval standards for releases for which there are no Alberta standards/guidelines in place.  Liaise with applicants, statement of concern filers and public interest groups to facilitate issue discussion and resolution. Write enforceable approvals reflecting the requirements based on the assessment of all relevant environmental issues and with consideration of related social and economics issues. Review summary reports on monitoring data required by approvals, conduct facility inspections to ensure that any air, soil and/or water quality/emission problems are identified and addressed in a timely, consistent and economic manner. Meet with industry officials to influence strategies and provide assistance for improvement of their environmental performance. Negotiate with industries to develop innovative, environmentally acceptable and cost-effective options for resolution of identified problems. Participate on the Industrial Approvals Team by providing input on various air, water, waste and engineering issues to identify and mitigate the potential risks to human health, safety, property and the environment. Confirm information submitted by industry hired consultants in support of proposals are relevant, accurate and supported by current scientific knowledge/principles, as required. Prepare recommendations, draft action requests and briefing notes for management review.

Qualifications

Required:

Bachelor of Science degree in Civil, Chemical, Mechanical or Environmental Engineering. Minimum 5 years of related work experience are required.  Candidates must be eligible for membership with APEGA as a Professional Engineer. Active membership preferred. Valid Class 5 Driver’s license.

Preference will also be considered for candidates that have:

Previous experience working with Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act.  Experience in a variety of industrial settings (including chemical manufacturing, hazardous waste management, landfills, power plants, etc.).  Additional related education considered in lieu of experience on a one-for-one basis.

Candidates who do not meet the educational and experience requirements may be considered at a lower classification and salary.
