Job Information

The Health Information Specialist 1 reports to the Supervisor, Health Information Services and is responsible for the accurate filing of all health information for the purposes of continuity of care. The incumbent is responsible for managing the lending of patient charts to authorized staff and the timely retrieval and return of these charts. This individual will comply with the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) Access to information and Protection of Privacy (ATIPP) privacy legislation and authority privacy practices.

This position is the initial contract for health data or information from staff, the general public, other Authority community health centres, other hospitals and healthcare providers within and outside the Northwest Territories. The incumbent has an impact on the public's perception of the Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA)'s practices regarding privacy and security of personal health information. The Health Information Specialist 1 is responsible for the accurate filing of more than 100 documents or charts daily, as well as answering approximately 50 phone calls per day. Medical reports and documents must be filed in an established order within the correct patient chart to prevent providers from making an inaccurate diagnosis or the administration of the wrong treatment.
