Duties

Supervises all research fishing operations, ensuring that the requirements of the Science Branch are met.
Responsible for the custody and maintenance of all fishing equipment aboard the Departmental Research Vessel.
Conning the vessel during fishing operations in co-operation with the Officer of the Watch; controlling all necessary winches from the central control point on the vessels bridge or fishing deck; monitoring such variables as warp length, vessels speed, depth, time and other parameters which determine the success of each set.
Provides all support necessary to ensure CCG meets its mandate.
Have the ability to stand a navigational watch at sea, assumes responsibility for safety of vessel and crew.

Occupational Certification:

SO-MAO-02 - Deck Officer / Fishing Officer:
TC Fishing Master, Fourth Class (or higher) Certification of Competency

SO-MAO-06 - Fishing Officer:
TC Fishing Master, Third Class (or higher) Certification of Competency
AND
TC Watchkeeping Mate, Near Coastal (or higher) Certification of Competency

Experience:
Experience as Master, Fishing Mate, Boatswain, or Deck Supervisor of a commercial trawler in the fishing industry
OR
Experience and training as a Fishing Officer, Officer of a Watch, Boatswain, or Twinehand / Leading Deckhand on a DFO Coast Guard Fishery Science Vessel

Valid Marine Emergency Duties, Certificate of Proficiency in STCW Basic Safety

Valid Marine Emergency Duties Certificate of Proficiency in STCW Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats

TC Master Gross Tonnage, Near Coastal (or higher) Certification of Competency

TC Fishing Master, Third Class (or higher) Certification of Competency

TC Watchkeeping Mate, Near Coastal (or higher) Certification of Competency

Experience:
Experience as Master, Fishing Mate, Boatswain, or Deck Supervisor of a commercial trawler in the fishing industry on the BC Coast

Significant experience and training as Fishing Officer, Officer of a Watch, Boatswain, or Twinehand / Leading Deckhand on a DFO Coast Guard Fishery Science Vessel*

*Significant experience defined as a minimum of 6 patrols (of 28 days) or operational days engaged in fishing operations within the last 10 years.

Operational Requirements:
Valid Drivers License or mobility associated with a drivers license

Conditions of employment

Secret security clearance

Valid Marine Medical - no limitations**
Valid Canadian passport or other valid travel documents/visas permitting entry to Canadian and United States Ports of Calls
Must be willing and able to wear a Respiratory Protection device and meet the standard of the CCG Respiratory Protection Program RPP
Willingness to wear and maintain a uniform per Canadian Coast Guard standards, inclusive of
CSA approved safety footwear, and maintain job related personal safety equipment
Must be willing and able to be deployed
Must be willing and able to perform overtime work as required, often on short notice
Must be willing and able to work shiftwork, rotating hours, and variable hours of work
Willingness to go to sea for prolonged periods of time (including Arctic Waters) in adverse weather conditions, and on various classes of vessels
Must be willing and able to travel by air, land and sea

**Candidates must hold a Transport Canada Marine Medical valid for the occupation group to which they have applied (Deck, Engine, or Catering) prior to initial hire. A Health Canada Occupational Health Medical must be completed after initial hire and must be maintained as an ongoing condition of employment
