Job Information

The incumbent is responsible for coordinating the development of new legislation and regulations and/or amending existing statutes and regulations, as required, for ensuring liquor and cannabis legislation is relevant, modern and in line with best practices of other jurisdictions, taking into consideration the northern context and considerations of a remote jurisdiction. This work requires extensive knowledge of the current liquor and cannabis framework in the Northwest Territories, and knowledge of best practices and emerging issues from other jurisdictions. The incumbent must establish working relationships with colleagues in other jurisdictions.

The incumbent is asked to think outside of the existing legislative regime to anticipate emerging legal, legislative, and regulatory requirements and identify and propose amendments to existing policies, legislation and regulations. This requires well-developed research and analytical skills, creativity, and the ability to think and work successfully outside of an established framework.

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:
A university degree in a relevant field and three (3) years of experience in legislative development, law, policy, or related field, with a minimum of one (1) year of work with a specific liquor or cannabis focus.
