Responsibilities :
Alberta Health has evidence-based policy, professional legislation, and regulation to help ensure that regulated health professions deliver health services in a manner that protects and serves the public interest .

Supports the development of feedback and advice to health professional regulatory colleges in developing up-to-date, relevant policy, regulation and legislation that results in such organizations governing themselves and their registered members in the public interest. Supports the development of advice about best professional regulatory practices and consideration for implications on workforce planning and health system delivery. Supports consultations and reviews legislative proposals, regulatory proposals (e.g., scope expansions), standards of practice and codes of ethics under the Health Professions Act. Provides information about the Health Professions Act to the public, health care providers, employers, and other stakeholders. 

The Ministry has evidence-based policy options regarding Professional Governance Issues

Assists in the development of status reports, briefing notes, backgrounders, key messages, and policy proposals, jurisdictional scans relating to professional regulation and professional governance for the Ministry.  Assists in the analysis of applications for regulation and preparing reports for the Minister with recommendations regarding the appropriateness of regulation. 

Regulatory and legislation issues are addressed to meet the needs of Albertans, the Ministry, and stakeholders .

Supports the development of strategies and communication documents to address current and emerging professional governance issues (for example, scope of practice and restricted activities).

The Health Professions Act and its regulations maintain currency .

Supports consultations with professional regulatory bodies and stakeholders on legislation and regulation development under the Health Professions Act and the preparation of supporting materials, as required. Supports the development and maintenance of project tracking systems.
