Position Summary

Reporting to the Supervisor, Waste Programs, the Labourer II - Transfer Station provides support for the City’s solid waste operations. As a supporting member of the crew, working under minimal supervision, the Labourer II is responsible for performing a variety of manual tasks.

Responsibilities

include, but are not limited to:
•Maintain and organize waste cart inventory, including assembly, delivery and repair
•Assist with the maintenance and organization of the Transfer Station
•Assist with other solid waste programs including Christmas tree collection
•Provide information on recycling and waste disposal to the public
•Work to minimize cross-contamination of recyclable materials by providing positive direction to customers and manually re-sorting material as necessary
•General care and cleaning of vehicle

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a minimum of Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent and possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License. Related solid waste and recycling experience is an asset. The candidate must be mechanically inclined, competent in using hand tools and small equipment. Good organizational and customer service skills, with the ability to comprehend and communicate detailed instructions orally and in writing are essential. The ability to make practical, fair and objective decisions pertaining to meeting customer needs, performing transfer station operations and maintenance in a cost effective manner is necessary. This is a physically demanding position; incumbents will be required to work in a variety of adverse conditions and perform various physical activities.

This position is within the scope of C.U.P.E. Local 30, and as such, you will be required to adhere to the articles contained within the Collective Agreement. A current Driver’s Abstract will be required at the time of interview.

Hours of Work:80 hours biweekly
(both weekday/weekend work will be required)

Duration:August 1, 2024 – December 31, 2024
