Job Summary
The Mental Health Nurse Coordinator, under the direction of the Urgent Care/Matrix Management Team and as part of the interdisciplinary Urgent Care Centre (UCC) team, is to provide a complex range of screening, triage, assessment, treatment and case coordination services to the community mental health and addictions population seen at the UCC. The incumbent provides program consultation and co-ordination, evaluation of clinical interventions, supervision, and provides professional and public education regarding mental health and addiction issues and resources. The incumbent will provide nursing leadership and clinical expertise in the development and maintenance of, community mental health and addiction treatment programs and ensure nursing practice standards are maintained.
Education
Graduate of an approved School of Nursing. Possession of and ability to maintain a current registration with the Registered Psychiatric Nurses Association of Saskatchewan (RPNAS) or College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS). Current BCLS certification.
Experience
Minimum of three years of experience within the last five years working in inpatient mental health and/or community mental health and addictions services. Demonstrated clinical expertise in assessment, diagnosis and treatment of major mental health disorders and addiction issues.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities
Excellent knowledge and skills related to in-patient and community psychiatric nursing practice including but not limited to assessment, triage, treatment, case management, medication usage and side effects. Ability to identify and evaluate areas of client difficulty across a wide range of clinical presentations and formulate evidence based interventions. Sound understanding and demonstrated knowledge of the needs of people with mental health/addiction concerns and their families, with extensive knowledge of programs, resources and services in the community. Demonstrated ability to conduct mental health and addiction screening and/or assessments and provide treatment planning and crisis intervention/treatment for children, youth and adults with mental health and addictions problems. Experience and understanding of how concurrent disorders and social determinants of health impact the lives of individuals. Demonstrated understanding and sensitivity to social and cultural diversity. Sound knowledge of Truth and Reconciliation and its impact on working with individuals experience a mental health/addictions crisis. Knowledge of the principles of recovery and Trauma Informed Practice. Demonstrated ability to assess and respond effectively to aggressive behavior and/or self-harm. Demonstrated knowledge of psychopharmacology (indications and side effects). Working knowledge of psychiatric, mental health and substance abuse disorders, the management of mental health and addictions emergencies and related psychiatric/ psychosocial/addictions interventions and treatment models. Able to work independently and in a self motivated manner with the ability to respond under pressure. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and in partnership with a multidisciplinary team and other agencies in the community. Knowledge and practical application of the Mental Health Services Act. Demonstrated leadership skills, workload management and administration skills. Excellent consultation and public relation skills with the ability to maintain effective work relationships. Excellent interpersonal competence including effective problem solving, decision-making and conflict resolution skills. Excellent communication skills - both written and oral. Ability to prepare reports in a clear, concise and timely manner and ability to provide public presentations and professional training. Ability to enter and retrieve data in a computer database system. Basic computer / keyboarding skills.
