Fraser Health is seeking a skilled Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse to join our Aboriginal Community Mental Health team. As a key member of our team, you will provide clinical mental health nursing services to Aboriginal clients in community programs, working collaboratively with the interprofessional care team to deliver person-centered and recovery-oriented care.
Key Responsibilities- Enhance and Develop Aboriginal Mental Health Services
- Work with local community Aboriginal health/mental services/agencies to enhance and/or maintain existing, and develop new Aboriginal mental health services.
- Develop and deliver educational events to clients and/or families as needed that are culturally sensitive and relevant.
- Provide Diagnostic Client Assessment and Short and Long Term Therapy
- Function as a primary nursing therapist and case manager, providing diagnostic client assessment and short and long term individual, group, and family therapy, using a variety of interviewing, counseling and assessment methods, in accordance with professional standards and clinical policies and practices.
- Manage cases and formulate treatment plans and goals in conjunction with appropriate facility staff, including joint care plans with health, mental health services/agencies and Aboriginal service partners.
- Provide Crisis Intervention and Linkages
- Provide crisis intervention with a focus on outreach throughout the corridor.
- Provide a linkage between acute care hospitals, community mental health and addictions services, Aboriginal community agencies and organizations on and off reserve, primary care services providers and other community services providers.
- Facilitate Referrals and Client Access
- Facilitate referrals by working closely with service providers and with the active participation of individual clients and/or their families, ensuring that cases will be handled in a culturally sensitive manner.
- Provide consultation and referral assistance to service providers to identify and access appropriate services in the community.
- Provide Culturally Sensitive Education and Support
- Provide appropriate culturally sensitive educational materials to local Mental Health Centre staff and agencies that work with Aboriginal clients with a mental illness.
- Participate in research and quality improvement activities by identifying client care issues, collecting data, and identifying needs and recommendations for corrective action and changes to practices, procedures or protocols.
- Participate in Local Committees and Advisory Boards
- Participate as a member of local committees and advisory boards to provide and receive information as a representative of the Community Mental Health team, as assigned.
Graduation from an approved School of Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing. Two (2) years' recent related experience providing treatment services to individuals with mental health and/or concurrent disorders, including one year of experience working with Aboriginal clients, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. May require completion of a substance use certificate program. Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse and/or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and access to personal vehicle with appropriate insurance coverage.
