Job Description: Dedicated Occupational Therapist sought to make a meaningful impact on patients' lives and help them regain independence at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, B.C. As an Occupational Therapist, you will work with patients to enhance their quality of life and promote health and well-being. Your primary responsibility will be to provide occupational therapy services to patients, including assessment, treatment planning, and implementation of evidence-based interventions. You will work collaboratively with the interprofessional care team to ensure seamless patient care and promote patient and family-centered care. You will also participate in approved research and quality improvement activities, and maintain accurate records of patient progress. Key qualifications include current registration with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC and knowledge of occupational therapy theory and practice. Additional skills and abilities include effective communication and consultation skills, ability to work independently and collaboratively, and basic knowledge of research process and methodology.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide occupational therapy assessment and treatment planning for patients, including identifying patient and therapist expectations, selecting and applying evidence-based assessment methods, and consulting with members of the healthcare team.
  • Implement interventions in accordance with established treatment guidelines and educate patients and caregivers regarding self-management, health promotion, and injury/disability prevention.
  • Participate in the interprofessional care planning process for patients, ensuring the plan is established and implemented effectively and updating care plans as necessary.
  • Evaluate and document the effectiveness of interventions, including conducting ongoing assessment and monitoring of patient responses and evaluating changes in health status, function, and occupational performance against pre-determined goals and expected outcomes.
  • Collaborate with patients and their families/caregivers in developing the care plan and encourage family participation in the development, implementation, and ongoing modification of the care plan.
  • Maintain accurate records of patient progress, including gathering information, entering data into computerized databases, and documenting information into approved formats.
  • Delegate components of treatment to rehabilitation assistants by providing work direction and verbal and/or written instruction, ensuring and documenting the appropriate transfer of function and ensuring quality patient care.
  • Act as an occupational therapy resource to other occupational therapists, rehabilitation assistants, and students by assisting with orientation and demonstrating procedures, providing occupational therapy information and in-services to other members of the healthcare team, and attending meetings as a representative of occupational therapy.
  • Participate in team/program activities required to enhance and optimize the delivery of care and to facilitate evidence-based practice, promote quality and safety principles, and identify processes/procedures that require improvement and provide recommendations for review.
  • Participate in approved occupational therapy and interprofessional research, special projects, and committees, including professional practice councils and clinical decision support tool development.
Qualifications:
  • Current full registration with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC.
  • Knowledge of occupational therapy theory and practice within a patient and family-centered model of care.
  • Knowledge of the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia standards of practice and practice guidelines for clinical practitioners.
  • Knowledge of occupational therapy standardized tests, measures, use of equipment, and related techniques.
  • Broad knowledge of other healthcare professions and their role in patient care.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, caregivers, rehabilitation assistants, members of the interprofessional care team, both verbally (one-on-one and in groups) and in writing.
  • Ability to teach and provide effective consultation to patients, caregivers, rehabilitation assistants, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.
  • Ability to establish workload priorities and adjust to unexpected events.
  • Basic knowledge of research process and methodology.
  • Ability to operate related equipment, including relevant software applications.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
