Job Description:

Lotus Group is proud to have partnered with our esteemed client who is seeking an Environmental Scientist to join their team based in Edmonton, Alberta.

The Senior Environmental Scientist leads, manages, and supports environmental assessment and monitoring projects in the urban development, First Nation, oil and gas, and natural resource management sectors. The Senior Environmental Scientist manages complex and multi-disciplinary projects and mentors intermediate and junior staff. The individual will have an excellent understanding of and the ability to interpret and apply environmental legislation applicable to their key industry sectors, including the regulatory and permitting processes at all levels of government (municipal, provincial, territorial, and federal).

Specific Responsibilities:

Technical Responsibilities and Activities:

  • Development, application and maintenance of the companies Operating Procedures.
  • Manage and/or lead remediation and reclamation program planning (large and small scale) including site assessments, data collection, scheduling, subcontractor oversight and work plan development while ensuring environmental diligence and public safety.
  • Performing and oversight of field setup duties including: reviewing scope of work, logistics support, equipment preparation (including all technological devices, applications, and data collection), ground disturbance requirements, project and safety meetings.
  • Coordination and execution of assigned environmental assessment and monitoring field programs including environmental assessments (Phase 1, 2, and 3), subsurface investigations (soil monitoring, remediation, and spills), monitoring well installation, soil and groundwater sampling, Detailed Site Assessments, and site remediation monitoring.
  • Development of Conceptual Site Model (CSM) based on site specific data.
  • Interprets, records/reviews, and validates analytical data retrieved from field work relative to regulations and guidelines ensuring accurate and comprehensive reporting.
  • Preparation and review technical reports related to environmental assessments, risk, and reclamation projects including the compilation and interpretation of environmental data for distribution to clients, regulatory bodies or public.
  • Responsible for drafting conclusions and proposing recommendations.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable environmental regulations and guidelines throughout project implementation.
  • Mentor and assist with training of junior and intermediate project staff.
  • Act as a resource for internal and external stakeholders, providing scientific and technical guidance

Safety Responsibilities:

  • Participation in the organizations and client specific health and safety programs.
  • Responsible for conducting site audits and ensuring overall project safety.
  • Demonstrates respect and is accountable for care and maintenance of company property (workspace, vehicles, equipment, computers, phones, etc.)
  • Reports any maintenance‐related concerns to the appropriate personnel immediately.

Business Development Responsibilities:

  • Leads and participates in business development initiatives to grow the organization's client relationships.
  • Prepare and review proposals including scopes of work, budget estimates and formal RFP submissions.
  • Seeks out opportunities to contribute to business development initiatives through day-to-day project interactions.
  • Directly liaising with clients and stakeholders and developing business opportunities.
  • Identify and bring forward to management new networking opportunities (i.e. conferences, seminars, webinars, client events, etc.)

Professional Development Responsibilities:

  • Remains up to date with developments in ecological science and related areas, as well as environmental issues and changes in legislation.
  • Actively participates in self‐directed professional development opportunities (reviewing professional publications, establishing networks, staying current on industry developments, etc.)
  • Contributes to and actively participates in company‐directed professional development opportunities and events (professional association memberships, conferences, seminars, courses, training sessions, webinars, etc.)

Project Management Responsibilities:

  • Responsible to liaise with clients on a program and project level, including but not limited to:
  • Understand what client compliance needs and/or objectives are.
  • Update client on progress and with any proposed changes to scope.
  • Provide conclusions and recommendations to clients.
  • Update client project software (as required).
  • Understand and follow the established client communication requirements.
  • Ensure projects are delivered on-time, on-budget, with an appropriate quality standard for each project, whether conducted by self or by other team members.
  • Coordinate project resources from various sources to build effective multi-disciplinary teams aligning with project goals and objectives.
  • Communicates effectively with project teams regarding the project scope, goals and deliverables; includes coordinating project team members and subcontractors, defining schedules and identifying deadlines as necessary.
  • Develops effective work schedules for the team, taking into account client and contractor requirements, team members scheduled time off and any other applicable considerations.
  • Participate in improving company resources and tools to improve production and efficiency.
  • Complete, manage and review daily time and expenses entries relative to assigned projects.

Specific Requirements:

  • Degree or diploma in Environmental Science, or related disciplines.
  • Registration as a Professional in applicable discipline
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in the environmental consulting industry, including three (3) years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience developing conceptual site models.
  • Experience developing/implementing data management protocols.
  • Ability to design/implement environmental assessments and monitoring programs.
  • Must have experience managing multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Strong knowledge with federal and provincial environmental legislation applicable to the key industry sectors.
  • Experienced with mapping software, GIS and GPS operation.
  • Experienced with regulatory submission and reporting programs (e.g. OneStop).
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of MS Office and Adobe programs.
  • Effective problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal), interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Technical writing and analytical skills (ability to collect and analyze information)
  • Exhibits attention to detail and is committed to producing accurate and high-quality work
  • Ability to organize, prioritize work and meet deadlines with a high degree of personal initiative
  • Ability to build and maintain lasting working relationships with internal and external customers
  • Ability to liaise with external stakeholders, regulators, and clients
  • Displays a high level of professionalism and ethical behavior
  • Ability to work efficiently as a part of a team as well as independently
  • Readily adapt to changing priorities and effectively work in a changing and high-volume work environment
  • Must be able to travel locally (and within BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan)
  • Must possess a valid Alberta Class 5 drivers license
