Training Opportunity: Cardiac ICU

St. Michael's Hospital is looking for Registered Nurses registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario who are interested in working in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Selected candidates will have the chance to participate in a 13-week program where they will receive a conditional offer of employment upon successful completion. The course includes both academic and clinical evaluation components, with the academic portion being completed virtually. Internal candidates will also undergo a 60-day trial period before confirmation, while external candidates will be assessed based on the ONA collective agreement probation terms.

As an RN in this role, you will work in a dynamic environment as part of an inter-professional team, advocating for wellness and delivering safe, effective, and ethical nursing care. Sharing your knowledge, expertise, and contributing to nursing practice excellence will be key aspects of the role. Continuous learning, education, and reflective practice are encouraged to enhance your competencies.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The primary responsibilities of the RN in the Cardiac ICU include:

  • Being accountable for decisions and professional practice
  • Establishing therapeutic relationships with patients
  • Collaborating with the care team
  • Coordinating and communicating patient care activities

The RN's key areas of responsibility are:

Patient Care:

  • Assessing patient care and learning needs
  • Developing and implementing a care plan
  • Engaging in critical thinking and evidence-based interventions
  • Organizing nursing care and evaluating its effectiveness
  • Providing health education to patients and families
  • Contributing to discharge planning
  • Referring patients to other services as needed

Collaboration & Coordination:

  • Coordinating patient care activities
  • Maintaining inter-professional relationships
  • Communicating for a seamless patient care transition
  • Participating in hospital committees and groups

Leadership:

  • Aligning behavior with the organization's values
  • Supporting professional practice advancement
  • Engaging in self-reflection and ongoing learning
  • Mentoring and coaching colleagues and students
  • Advocating for improved nursing practice

Research:

  • Participating in research projects
  • Supporting evidence-based practice and quality improvement initiatives

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current General Class Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Minimum of two years of acute care experience
  • BLS Certification
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Proven planning and time management abilities
  • Excellent attendance record

Unity Health Toronto may reject applications from candidates who have completed a sponsored Critical Care Course within the past year.
