About this opportunity:

Reporting to the Director, Lloyd Upgrader, the General Manager, Operations will lead the Lloydminster Upgrader Complex Operations department comprising of ~175 personnel to achieve safe, reliable and cost effective outcomes for both the Upgrader and Ethanol plants within the complex. Leadership, communication and development of the department including process technicians (operators), trainers, fire technician, and contractors as well as their leaders is also central to the role. The successful candidate will both provide day to day support and troubleshooting as well as strategic planning for the 3-5 year time horizon for the Operations function at the Complex. Working closely with the Maintenance, Engineering, Safety and Operational Integrity as well as Business Management/Production Planning/Logistics departments daily, the General Manager Operations will ensure the ongoing safe, reliable and cost effective operation of the Complex.

This is a senior experienced leadership as well as technical role. It involves some of the most complex and highest process safety risk equipment in the Cenovus portfolio. This leader will also have a continuous improvement mindset - looking to understand and selectively implement best practices in safety, technical, operational and leadership into the organization with the objective of improved business outcomes.

Work Environment:

What you'll do:

  • Maintain safe work practices, in compliance with company policies and procedures, and all applicable provincial / federal laws and regulations
  • Ensure all operating activities comply with the expectations of the Cenovus Operational Integrity Management System (COIMS) with particular attention to safe operations and training as well have improvement plans in place
  • Ensure plant performance is optimized to meet or exceed budget and product quality standards are adhered to
  • Monitor cost controls and implement corrective actions including strategic efficiencies
  • Liaise with Meridian Limited Partnership (Co-Generation facility), Upgrader Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, and Lloydminster synergy groups
  • Provide leadership to employees, including recruiting, managing and developing the performance and training of members of the team
  • Apply good financial control and leadership in the areas of energy management and cost reduction initiatives
  • Ensure quality control is maintained in the production of HSB, LSD, ULSD, coke and sulphur
  • Participate actively in the Plant Leadership Team (PLT) to ensure alignment on objectives, scoping of solutions and communication of outcomes including recognition of our teams,
  • Review and monitor all Operations commercial contracts and contractor relationships
  • Supervise day-to-day operations including solving operational problems, prioritizing technical workload, reviewing project designs, and approving procedures
  • Approve MOC's / RFC's as required and ensure utilization of the system
  • Ensure operational support for the PHA, HAZOP's and What-If program
  • Lead the planning and execution of start-up and shutdown process as required to ensure safe operations of the facility is the primary goal
  • Ensure site emergency preparedness and security is maintained including responding to plant emergencies and coordinating the efforts as per the Emergency Response Plan
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to ensure long-term competitiveness of the facility

Who you are:

  • A degree in Engineering is preferred but equivalent knowledge and experience working in a Senior Operational Management position would also be considered
  • Minimum 15 years' progressive experience in a plant environment
  • Minimum 5 years' experience managing multi-disciplinary teams of 10 or more personnel

As this position has been identified as safety sensitive, employment of a final candidate selected for this position will be conditional upon successful completion of required pre-employment medical and alcohol/drug assessments

For this position you will be required to maintain a Class 5 driver's license, a satisfactory driving record, and adhere to the appropriate Company policies and guidelines. A driver's abstract will be one of the background checks requested in the pre-employment screening for the final candidate
