This is a full-time position for a Research Assistant (RA) with the Pediatric Anesthesia Research Team (PART) and Pediatric Anesthesia Department at BC Children's Hospital (BCCH).
PART ) is the research arm of the Department of Pediatric Anesthesia at BCCH. Projects cover many aspects of pediatric anesthesia and pain care with study designs ranging from randomized-controlled drug trials to quality improvement initiatives, practice audits, and participation in multicenter international study registries. Our research aims to improve anesthesia care for children in BC, and critically, aims to improve patient outcomes. Our studied population are children ranging from infants to 18 years of age, who come to the hospital for elective surgery.
The RA will be involved with recruiting participants, collecting data, performing data analyses, preparing data summaries for reports, presentations and publications, maintaining study documents and databases, and submitting ethics applications.
Organizational Status
The RA will report directly to the Clinical Research Manager (CRM) and the PART Leadership Team. The RA will also report to Principal Investigators (PIs) who hold University of British Columbia (UBC) faculty appointments within the Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics (APT) for tasks related to their projects. They will interact with other members of the APT Department, collaborators from other Departments within UBC and BCCH, and other clinical and research staff.
Work Performed
- Communicate and collaborate with PART members, physicians, trainees, and various internal/external stakeholders.
- Assist PART members and Principal Investigators (PI) on projects, including study design and operationalization.
- Screen patients for study eligibility and recruit potential participants.
- Provide information to and answer questions families have about research projects.
- Obtain informed consent from participants, while adhering to informed consent procedures and ethical guidelines for research involving human subjects.
- Maintain participant tracking logs.
- Collect data in various settings (surveys, in-person, operating rooms, hospital wards).
- Enter collected data into research databases and ensure data management procedures are followed.
- Review all research documentation to ensure completion and accuracy.
- Aid with project submission(s) to regulatory boards and ethics committees.
- Conduct literature searches and reviews.
- Support research document development and review (e.g., protocol, consent forms).
- Perform data analyses and prepare summaries for reports, presentations, and publications.
- Attend and participate in relevant meetings and, at times, communicate project updates.
- Guide new/less-experienced research trainees.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Errors in judgement may beach trust and confidentiality, influence the ability of research staff to meet critical deadlines, compromise research projects, and impact the credibility of investigators and the department. As data and results are disseminated to other research partners and required for grant/funding initiatives, errors can negatively influence credibility and funding opportunities. Lack of attention to regulatory guidelines and approvals could suspend investigator/physician and hospital/university funding or research activities.
Supervision Received
The RA will receive general direction from the CRM, the PART Leadership team, and PIs. The RA will work alongside other team members including fellow students and research staff. Direction on new assignments and procedures will be provided, and familiar duties will allow for independence and autonomy. The RA will be responsible for exercising considerable initiative and judgement.
Supervision Given
The RA will not have any direction supervision roles, but may guide new/inexperienced research trainees.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Undergraduate degree with relevant experience.
- Experience in a research environment.

- Ability to tactfully and empathetically communicate with children and families.
- Self-motivated and self-aware, must be a collaborative team member, capable of working with minimal supervision.
- Ability to handle patient data in a strictly confidential manner.
- Exercise accuracy and attention to detail.
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task, organize, and prioritize responsibilities.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent time management skills.
- Ability to accommodate a flexible work schedule to maximize patient recruitment and data collection.
- Ability to work autonomously and in a team environment.
