Sustainability & Government Relations Manager

Working Model: Hybrid (2 days in the office)

Location: Mississauga, ON

Where the Chemistry Happens...

Reporting to the Head, Sustainability and Government Relations, you will be responsible for leading and implementing BASF Canada's Sustainability and Government Relations strategies.

In this role, you will support the development and implementation of a collaborative, proactive government relations strategy, including building relationships with government officials, leading the provision of input to relevant legislation, keeping track of upcoming legislation that will affect BASF, and conducting advocacy and lobbying as appropriate.

BASF has made ambitious public sustainability commitments to achieve carbon neutrality, contribute to the circular economy, and drive sustainable solutions to customers. In addition, BASF is driving toward diversity, equity and inclusion targets. In this role, you will support the achievement of these goals at BASF Canada, as well as supporting sustainability in the region.

Formula for Success: You Will...
  • Develop and implement sustainability strategies: Create strategies that prioritize sustainability goals in alignment with short, medium, and long-term objectives. These strategies should encompass environmental, social, and governance aspects.
  • Manage government relations: Act as a key contact for BASF Canada on Indigenous Affairs, engaging in activities aimed at fostering positive relationships and advancing the journey towards Truth and Reconciliation. This includes leading BASF's participation in the Progressive Aboriginal Relations (PAR) program and achieving milestone certifications.
  • Engage with stakeholders: Actively engage with key national stakeholders, such as business associations, government officials, and sustainability advocates. The goal is to promote BASF's corporate messages, brand, and interests while influencing public policies in Canada.
  • Understand customer views: Work closely with Business Units to understand customers' perspectives on sustainability topics and regulatory affairs. This knowledge will help prioritize and tailor BASF Canada's external messaging to meet the needs of the business.
  • Sustainability reporting: Lead the yearly sustainability reporting and presentation for BASF Canada, ensuring alignment with global and regional teams. This involves gathering and analyzing data to showcase BASF Canada's sustainability performance and progress.
  • Position sustainability as a source of innovation: Advocate for sustainability as a driver of innovation and competitive advantage within BASF. Integrate sustainability into the overall business strategy and effectively communicate its importance to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Government stakeholder engagement: Develop a strategy for engaging with key government officials on the federal and provincial levels. This includes building relationships, participating in relevant discussions, and advocating for BASF Canada's interests.
  • Support communication efforts: Provide support to the corporate communications team by sharing sustainability and government/indigenous relations stories and content. Contribute to the development of various communication products, including events, social media posts, presentations, podcasts, and speaking notes.
Ingredients for Success: What We Look for in You...
  • B.A./B.Sc with a focus on Sustainability and / or Political Science; MBA preferred.
  • 5 years' work experience in related areas with a minimum of 2 years in Government Relations.
  • High level of competence leading and managing projects from ideation to completion.
  • High level of comfort delivering presentations to a variety of internal and external audiences, and leading meetings.
  • Active professional social media presence.
  • High degree of computer and digital literacy.
  • Must be willing and able to constantly challenge the status quo and encourage improvement.
