Our Streetcar Way team has an exciting opportunity for an Equipment Operator Trainee to join its team

This position involves various work reporting locations, which may vary as directed by work assignments. Upon successful completion of the 12-month training program, you will be re-classified as an Equipment Operator (Wage Group 7).

What You Will Do

Under the direction of supervisory staff, you will receive training and instruction on the safe and efficient operation of heavy motorized equipment, vehicles, and associated equipment used in the construction and maintenance of streetcar track and track right-of-way. This will include, but is not limited to: vans, trucks, street sweepers, front end loaders, tractor backhoes with various attachments, forklifts, skid steer loaders, speed swing loaders, fuel trucks, MPRs or rail placement equipment, trucks equipped with high rail equipment, trucks with heavy snowplough, compacting equipment, etc.

You will also operate vehicles for the delivery of tools, materials, supplies, parts and equipment to various TTC locations and work sites, including loading and unloading cargo. You will operate equipment to excavate, move, load and grade pavement, gravel or other materials necessary for track maintenance and track replacement projects, and also perform snow removal duties using mechanically operated snow removal equipment.

Additionally, you will perform daily service checks and assist with a wide variety of other tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Setting out traffic delineators, barricades, flags, and work zones in strict accordance with published safety regulations;
  • Lifting or pulling manual track components and manually dragging and placing rail, as required;
  • Performing Track Maintainer duties when a vehicle is not required or available for operation;
  • Completing job reporting using Maximo, and completing Equipment Inspection Forms as required;

What Qualifications Do You Bring?
  • Training obtained through completion of Grade 10 education;
  • A valid class "G" province of Ontario driver's licence, or better, and the ability to pass the written and practical tests required for a class "DZ" driver's licence;
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions, including published operating/safety rules and regulations;
  • Ability to communicate clearly with the Control Centre and follow proper radio and telephone protocol to effectively exchange information and instructions;
  • You must successfully complete the TTC's Track Maintainer training program;
  • You also must attend and successfully complete all training programs for the operation of various types of heavy motorized equipment and vehicles related to the work;
