  • The work will normally be performed on the Night Shift or Afternoon Shift with Thursday/Friday as off days. The primary work location will be Greenwood Shop or Wilson Yard, however reporting locations will vary as dictated by work assignments.

What You Will Do:

  • This is motorized equipment and nonrevenue rail vehicle operation of a routine nature in the Subway Track Maintenance section in the Track & Structure Department. The work involves the safe and efficient operation of nonspecialized work cars such as flat cars, locomotives, wall washing units, rail cleaning cars, rail grinding cars, pumper/vacuum cars, ballast cars, steelwheeled snow removal equipment, etc. The work entails the operation of nonrevenue rail vehicles for the delivery of tools, materials, supplies, parts and equipment to various TTC locations and work sites; loading and unloading cargo; pushing/pulling nonpowered cars; grinding rails, washing/cleaning of walls and rails, spreading of ballast, pumping/vacuuming of track drains, etc.

The incumbents will also operate battery recharging equipment, perform daily service checks on the workcars and perform Track Maintainer duties or assist with a wide variety of manual tasks when a vehicle is not available or is in continuous operation.- The work is performed under the supervision of Track & Structure supervisory staff.

- This involves:

  • Performing daily service check (i.e. checking cables, hoses, lights, trip cock valves, collector shoes; tightening nuts, greasing, topping up oil and fluids, etc.) on the vehicle operated, reporting servicing or repairs required to supervisors and completing the appropriate forms; ensuring that vehicles are kept in a state of cleanliness both inside and outside;
  • Ensuring that rail cars are properly coupled/secured during push/pull operations; coupling/uncoupling vehicles as required;
  • Performing related duties as assigned;

What Qualifications Do You Bring?:

  • Completion of Grade 12 education or its recognized equivalent as determined by the Operations Training Centre;
  • Must be able to comprehend verbal and written instructions as demonstrated by an ability to understand and follow published operating/safety rules and regulations;
  • Must be able to speak clearly in order to exchange information and instructions with the control centres and follow proper radio and telephone protocol;
  • Must be able to attend and successfully complete all portions of the training to sustain the trainee status;
  • Must possess a valid class G province of Ontario driver's licence;
  • Must pass a vision test and established pretest set by the Training and Development Department;
  • Will be required to be fitted with a respirator;
  • Will be classified as a Workcar Operator Trainee for a period of 12months during which time the applicable training will be provided; those who successfully complete the classroom and onthejob training will be classified as a Workcar Operator (Wage Group 7);
  • Upon successful completion of the 12month Trainee period, will normally require up to 6 months of experience in order to become proficient in all aspects of the job.
