In this exciting, rewarding and challenging opportunity, you will manage court case files for a Detachment, providing liaison services with the court and monitoring the progress of files through the court system.

You will also provide court security services for the detachment and court and participate in the escort of offenders.

Note:
The application process for new Special Constables consists of several phases. Special Constable training includes four (4) weeks mandatory training located in Orillia, Ontario.

These phases consist of:

psychological testing, security clearance, background investigation, training (e.g., First aid/CPR, Provincial & Federal Legislation and Use of Force/Powers of arrest), and finally the application and approval by the Ministry of the Solicitor General, Public Safety Division and the Commissioner of the OPP.

What can I expect to do in this role?To manage court case files for a Detachment, providing liaison services with the court and monitoring the progress of files through the court system. To provide court security services for the detachment and court and to participate in the escort of offenders.

How do I qualify?Mandatory

  • Ability to pass an OPP background/ security investigation.
  • Ability to attain and maintain Special Constable status.
  • Ability to pass and maintain ongoing certification in Use of Force.
Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Ability to schedule court dates according to officer availability and reschedule to resolve conflicting dates. (Including but not limited to attending Trial Coordination Office Hours; Trial Scheduling Court and all involved follow up in scheduling witnesses, officers, and subject matter experts.)
  • Knowledge of OPP, Attorney General and Ministry policies and procedures (including Records Management System procedures) and legislation related to court proceedings, administration and documentation to coordinate detachment activities at court and ensure appropriate preparation and completion of all required court documents and information.
  • Knowledge of relevant sections of legislation such as the Criminal Code, Young Offenders Act, Youth Criminal Justice Act, Family Law Act, Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, provincial offenses and municipal by-laws to coordinate court proceedings, prepare briefs and other court documents. Knowledge of court processes (summons' subpoenas, warrants), procedures, operations and scheduling to coordinate and monitor court proceedings (attending bail court, criminal case management court, youth case management court, trial scheduling and Judicial Intensive Case Management Court).
  • Ability to perform a wide range of work within the policies and procedures of the organization, Ministry and the court system. Works under minimal daily supervision within defined parameters and procedures.
  • Oral Communication and interpersonal skills to liaise with and communicate, relay and exchange information, much of which is sensitive and confidential, with Judges, Justices of the Peace, Crown Attorneys, defense lawyers, uniformed officers, witnesses, victims, probation and parole officers, court staff and the public.
  • Oral communication skills to testify regarding continuity of drug exhibits in court, as required.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact with prisoners to elicit their cooperation while escorting them to and from court appearances and cells.
  • Written communication skills to compose and prepare court-related documents.
