Operations Shift Manager role requires leadership and management skills to ensure safe and efficient execution of shift operational plans and related site activities.

The ideal candidate will have a degree in business, operational management, logistics or related discipline, with a minimum of 5 years' experience as a Manager or Supervisor in a fast moving operation.

Key responsibilities include ensuring operational requirements and KPIs are met, providing consistent leadership, managing cargo handling operations, and ensuring safe and efficient interaction with maintenance activities.

Additional responsibilities include managing Operations Foremen, maintaining productive working relationships with labour and union representatives, and ensuring systems and procedures are followed.

The successful candidate will have strong people management skills, well-formed motivational skills, and solid negotiation, influencing, change management and labour relations skills.

They will also have strong communication and interpersonal skills, sound judgement and analytical thinking, and a solid understanding of vessel/rail/gate/yard cargo handling operations.

  • Ensure operational requirements and KPIs are met in an efficient and safe manner.
  • Provide consistent leadership for the operations on a shift-by-shift basis.
  • Manage the efficiency of cargo handling operations, including coordinating activities of different operational groups.
  • Ensure safe and efficient interaction with maintenance activities and personnel.
  • Manage Operations Foremen, including hiring, training, discipline, and off-boarding.
  • Maintain productive working relationships with labour and union representatives.
  • Ensure systems and procedures are followed to enable progress of operations to be monitored.
  • Identify and solve problems and issues daily, usually of a routine or moderately complex nature.
  • Drive a performance management culture within the operations team.
  • Advance agreed upon initiatives, propose new initiatives, and adopt a culture of continuous improvement.
  • A degree in business, operational management, logistics or other related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience as a Manager or Supervisor in a fast moving operation.
  • A positive, hands-on approach and the ability to work as a team member.
  • Strong people management skills with well-formed motivational skills, including solid negotiation, influencing, change management and labour relations skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build and maintain good working relationships and achieve buy in and ownership to quality standards/ initiatives with all departments and levels.
  • Sound judgement and analytical thinking that enables decision making, ability to manage projects and prioritize and manage timelines.
  • Solid understanding of vessel/rail/gate/yard cargo handling operations, vessel construction, cargo stowage, cargo securing and applicable regulations.
  • Outstanding computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office and the proven ability to learn new systems quickly.
  • Flexibility to meet the requirements of a 24/7 operation.
  • Willingness to develop skills across all functions of a Shift Manager role within DP World Canada.
  • Experience working in a safety-focused environment with an excellent understanding of Health and Safety legislation.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate a vehicle in an industrial site.
  • Ability to identify risks and hazards and maintain situational awareness while navigating through the terminal work environment.
  • Ability to ascend and descend ladders on vessels and equipment during the shift.
