Job Description Summary

UBC Facilities provides comprehensive facilities maintenance, operations and renovation services for lands and buildings owned by the University of British Columbia.

Within UBC Facilities there are two teams that employ Trades 2 Carpenters - Building Operations and the Construction Office.

Building Operation's units provide a wide range of services for the maintenance, repair and operation of all buildings on campus.

Construction Office trades provide a wide range of services for customer-funded renovation projects.

Trades 2 Carpenters perform skilled carpentry work on concrete forms, wooden framework, partitions and doorframes, moldings installation, stairs, sub-floors and floors as it pertains to the construction, repair and fabrication of buildings and may be responsible for the manufacturing of millwork and wooden furniture.

Organizational Status

Carpenters in the Construction Office report to the Project Supervisor. Carpenters work both independently as well with other carpenters and associated tradespeople, both at the apprentice and journeyperson level. Daily work assignments and instructions are given by the Project Supervisor as well as the Multi-Trade Subhead.

Work Performed

  • Requests and obtains material and equipment required for the work assigned.
  • Performs carpentry repair work, new construction and fabrication of building structures and fixtures, such as, wood and metal stud walls, wood frames, dry wall, plasterboard, forms, ceiling and floor tiles, molding and millwork.
  • Performs estimates and produces inspection reports on assigned jobs.
  • Performs door installations in new and/or existing frames.
  • Performs emergency call outs.
  • Performs other trades/construction related work, such as, installing concrete reinforcing rod and wire mesh and assisting in the pouring of concrete slabs and walls.
  • Ensures that the workplace is safe and follows safe work practices.
  • May be required to manufacture millwork and wooden furniture.
  • Communicates with customers as required to ensure the efficient delivery of service.
  • Periodically, positions in this classification may be assigned responsibility for providing training to and monitoring and checking the work of one or more apprentices or labourers.
  • Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Determines the sequence of work, the work methods and equipment to be employed and how best to complete the work based on technical knowledge of the trade and related departmental guidelines and policies; inappropriate decisions may result in project schedule delays and/or increased project costs.

Supervision Received

Carpenters work under general supervision from the Project Supervisor and the Multi-trade Subhead, as well as from oral and written instructions and according to approved procedures within the shop.

Supervision Given

Monitors and checks the work of apprentice(s) and labourers as the need arises.

Minimum Qualifications

A trade certification to journeyperson level as a Carpenter, a valid BC driver's license and a minimum five years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Unless expressly noted, preference will be given to field carpentry experience for positions normally assigned to the Construction Office. Experience in both joinery and field carpentry would be an asset.
  • For positions normally assigned to the Construction Office, work experience preference will be given to field carpenters.
  • A working knowledge of relevant industrial safety regulations and building codes. Ability to interpret drawings and specifications and to work independently with minimal supervision. Effective oral and written communication, organizational and problem-solving skills. Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
  • Ability to provide quality service to customers in a courteous, patient manner. Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships.
