Job Description Summary

UBC Building Operations provides comprehensive facilities maintenance, operations and renovation services for lands and buildings owned by the University of British Columbia. Trades are the heart and hands of Building Operations; they provide a wide range of services for the maintenance, repair and operation of all buildings on campus.

Head Carpenters work within the Architectural trades unit of Building Operations and have overall responsibility for the organization and direction of Sub-Head Carpenters, Carpenters, Bricklayers, Roofers, Upholsterers and assigned Labourers engaged in maintenance, installation and renovation work and for costing jobs and ordering required materials.

Organizational Status

The Head Carpenter reports to the Architectural Trades Manager and provides daily supervision to Carpenters, Bricklayers, Roofers, Upholsterers and Apprentices.

Work Performed

Provides overall supervision, organization and allocation of the work of assigned trades; Sub-Head Carpenters, Carpenters, Bricklayers, Roofers, Upholsterers, and assigned Labourers engaged in scheduled maintenance and installation activities.

Carries out inspections and tests; diagnoses defects in plant or equipment, takes remedial action as required or recommends solutions to management staff verbally or in writing.

Supervises and participates in training workers/apprentices as necessary.

Deals with day-to-day on-site problems by initiating appropriate action to correct the situation.

Prepares cost estimates for jobs and orders required materials.

Checks to ensure that work is completed in accordance with requirements and specifications.

Communicates with customers as required to ensure the efficient delivery of service.

Maintains work function related records, such as, timekeeping, costing, tools, equipment and work assignments.

Ensures that employees under his/her jurisdiction work in a correct and safe manner and in accordance with all normal safety standards and practices and university and departmental policies and procedures.

Participates in or performs the work of trades as required.

Responds to trouble calls and emergency call-outs.

Coordinates with other shops.

Ensures that the carpentry shop and equipment is maintained in good safe working conditions.

Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Makes decisions regarding the organization and allocation of trades and labouring work and acceptability of work performed; inappropriate decisions may result in service delays and costs.

Supervision Received

Works under general direction and from oral and written instructions, work orders, drawings and specifications.

Supervision Given

Organizes, allocates and supervises the work of architectural building related trades and assigned labouring staff.

Minimum Qualifications

A trade certification to journeyperson level in a related architectural trade, a valid BC driver’s license and a minimum seven years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Valid BC Drivers Licence. A trade certification to journeyperson level in a related architectural trade.Minimum of 7 years of related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.Ability to analyze and interpret job specifications, provide recommendations and resolve technical problems using superior problem solving skills and innovation.

Ability to plan, organize, monitor, and evaluate projects within the Carpentry shop.

Ability to estimate labour and material costs.

Ability to delegate work to staff and monitor performance, providing effective technical guidance and assistance when needed.

Ability to perform job-related inspections and assess technical training requirements and develop, coordinate, and evaluate training for crew members.

Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing.

Ability to work with a diversity of people and provide quality service to customers in a courteous, patient manner and effectively resolve complaints exercising sound judgment.

Ability to proactively resolve any staffing issues that arise; working toward consensus and resolving differences. Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships with team members and to lead by example; fostering a cooperative and respectful work environment for their crew
