Job Summary: Food Service Worker position at Carnegie Community Centre, responsible for cleaning and kitchen tasks in a fast-paced environment, working with volunteers and community members.

Carnegie Community Centre is a vital resource for Vancouver's Downtown Eastside community, offering educational, recreational, cultural, and social programming. As a Food Service Worker, you will play a crucial role in maintaining a clean and safe environment for patrons and staff. This position requires manual labor in a commercial kitchen, with a focus on cleaning and sanitizing dishes, utensils, and equipment.

The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of cleaning and sanitizing methods, as well as experience working with socially and economically disadvantaged populations. You will be responsible for organizing work areas, establishing effective work schedules, and maintaining a safe and healthy environment for staff, volunteers, and community members.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform a variety of cleaning and kitchen tasks, including washing, sanitizing, and putting away dishes, utensils, pots, pans, and other kitchen equipment.
  • Ensure the work area is clean, organized, and free from hazards.
  • Operate modern dishwashing equipment and report any repair requirements.
  • Assist other kitchen staff with receiving supplies and stocking.
  • Sort dirty dishes, food waste, and garbage into appropriate recycling bins.
  • Ensure dishwashing practices comply with food safe requirements.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with staff, volunteers, and community members.
  • Supervise and provide guidance to volunteers as needed.
  • Deal with complaints from volunteers and patrons in a tactful and compassionate manner.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of tenth school grade, preferably supplemented with Food Safe training and experience working with socially and economically disadvantaged populations.
  • Working knowledge of cleaning and sanitizing methods, as well as health hazards in food preparation and service.
  • Ability to operate modern dishwashing equipment and maintain a safe and healthy environment.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, hot, humid environment for long periods of time.
  • Ability to use computer to check and respond to emails.
