STATUS: Permanent; Part-Time

About the Position:
You are an energetic team player who will participate in all animal care duties and ensure optimal care levels are administered to the animals based on the Five Freedoms. You have experience in customer relations and previous experience in animal husbandry. You care deeply about animals and uphold the highest animal care standards.
Some specific duties:
Primary Responsibilities:
- To work collaboratively with others to maintain the entire physical plant in a clean, sanitary and efficient manner on an ongoing basis
- To maintain the kennels, runs and cat cages in a clean, sanitary and efficient manner on an ongoing basis
- To treat the animals humanely, with compassion and concern, and transmit these values to others both on and off the job
- To provide the animals with proper diet and to ensure that they feed and water properly
- To ensure the animal's health and well-being in accordance with the society's animal health policy, including the administration of such medications as specified by the animal health technologist or other authorized shelter staff
- To assist with the necessary humane euthanasia of any animal in order to ensure the procedure is handled in a respectful, compassionate and stress-free manner
- To maintain a high level of standards in order to portray to the public the image of the spca as a compassionate and caring organization
- To willingly help co-ordinate the supporting work of volunteers, in the spirit that we all work together for the benefit of all animals
- To perform other duties, as required, which are necessary to ensure the smooth operation of the shelter
- To collaborate with other shelter personnel thereby creating a positive and harmonious atmosphere among staff and volunteers, enhancing team performance
Secondary Key Responsibilities
- To assist the front office staff as may be required in:
- Telephone reception and other communications
- Answering counter inquiries
- Receiving animals for surrender
- All adoption procedures
- License and merchandise sales
- Performance of general office routines and record keeping
- Other related duties
- To perform all of the above in a courteous, friendly way to clients, volunteers and other staff, to ensure the highest possible reputation for the shelter and the maintenance of the goodwill of its community
Qualifications you need to have:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid Class N or 5 BC Drivers' License and driver's abstract
- Strong desire to provide excellent customer service skills: patience, professional, positive attitude, attention to detail, adaptability
- Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
- Resourceful team player who excels at building trusting relationships with colleagues, customers and volunteers
- Highly motivated self-starter who takes initiative with minimal supervision
- A sound knowledge of animals, their breeds, characteristics and common diseases
- Previous kennel or animal care experience considered an asset
- Demonstrable interest in all aspects of animal welfare
- Philosophical harmony with the mission, vision and strategic direction of the BC SPCA
- Previous animal control, welfare or enforcement experience an asset
- Position is physically demanding and includes heavy lifting, pushing and pulling; therefore, an individual with the ability to maintain a level of fitness and endurance to fulfill the required duties is an asset
- Familiar with working in a union environment
- Computer experience: Windows, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
- The animals in our care require attention seven days a week, must be flexible and able to work weekdays, weekends and statutory holidays
