About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Head of Developer Documentation to lead our technical writing team at - the hub for Shopify Developers. In this role, you will be responsible for establishing best practices and processes that govern the site, and leading a team of technical writers to develop and maintain self-help content for our growing community of Shopify app and theme developers.

The ideal candidate is passionate about breaking down complex technical topics for audiences with varying levels of expertise. You enjoy diving into code to understand the domain deeply, and have a knack for translating intricate functionality into clear, easy-to-understand documentation. Additionally, you excel at collaborating with Product Management and Engineering teams to identify opportunities for improving documentation processes and developer engagement.

What You'll Do:

  • Lead and mentor a team of technical writers, overseeing the strategy, creation, and maintenance of content.
  • Create a culture of excellence in technical documentation across the broader Shopify org by creating awareness and celebrating best in class content
  • Spearhead the editorial review process to ensure that all content comes together in a way that makes it feel like it came from a single author.
  • Work hand-in-hand with product managers, developers, and stakeholders to ensure our documentation is not just accurate and relevant, but also user-friendly. Our goal is to set a high standard in our industry, making our resources a trusted and reliable reference for users.
  • Own and organize the documentation website, ensuring a seamless user experience.
  • Write, edit, and review technical documents, including API guides, tutorials, and reference materials, adhering to technical standards and clarity.
  • Stay updated on new features and updates in Shopify's offerings, translating complex functionalities into easy-to-understand documentation.
  • Implement strategies to improve documentation processes and increase user engagement.
  • Provide feedback and recommendations to product teams on how to improve API and feature communication, and identify areas for simplification.

It's a bonus if you have:

  • Familiarity with AI, LLMs, vector search, and prompt engineering.
  • Knowledge of JavaScript, Ruby, Markdown, HTML, and/or CSS.
  • Understanding of GraphQL or REST APIs.
  • Experience with version control software such as Git.

You will bring to the table:

  • You are a developer advocate. You understand the nuances of this audience, are able to reach them and can advocate for their needs internally.
  • You are a hands-on leader. You have been managing leads and ICs for a number of years and you're pretty good at it. You have built and led teams across multiple regions and timezones. You have some tried and true techniques for leveling up your team, removing obstacles, mentoring, and getting them to open up about challenges.
  • You've been managing multiple technical teams and are able to see the product holistically and encourage cross-team collaboration.
  • You are data-driven. You rely on sound data to make decisions, and you expect that your teams will do the same. You believe in setting success metrics, goals, and timelines. You are open minded about data from other parts of the business and taking it into consideration when making your decisions.
  • You are humble. You view product development as a team sport and you foster this environment within your teams. No job is too small - for you or for anyone on the team. We all pitch in to get the job done and support each other. You lead by example by being willing to roll up your sleeves and contribute tactically if that's what your team needs. You believe that you can learn from all of your team members, no matter how experienced. You won't tolerate anything else.
