Are you a recent graduate of a PSW Program in Ontario? You may qualify for the Personal Support Worker Return of Service (PSW ROS) through Health Force Ontario. This program provides a monetary incentive to eligible PSWs in exchange for a commitment to an eligible employer. You may also qualify for a relocation incentive if moving more than 100km to accept this role.

Job Summary: The Personal Support Worker offers personal support and homemaking services to clients and families within the established VON standards. The PSW collaborates with the healthcare team to ensure clients achieve independence and wellbeing.

This position is eligible for a wage enhancement from the Ontario Government for all hours spent caring for clients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Observes and assesses the client's or family's situation to determine any necessary adjustments in the care plan.
  • Assists in developing the care plan under the direction of the Personal Support Program Manager.
  • Implements changes to the care plan for safety and financial reasons.
  • Reports any changes in the client's needs to the supervisor.
  • Performs personal support tasks such as cleaning, meal preparation, and personal care.
  • Provides bedside care under nurse direction.
  • Offers respite and childcare support when needed.
  • Plans daily activities and priorities under supervision.
  • Assesses the client's communication pattern and ability to relate.
  • Communicates with the healthcare team regarding client needs.
  • Complies with health and safety regulations and VON policies.
  • Performs duties as assigned.

External and Internal Relationships:

  • Collaborates with the supervisor and program manager on client plan adjustments.

Education, Designations, and Experience:

  • High school diploma.
  • CCA Certification required in Nova Scotia.
  • Must have certification in Home Support Worker, Personal Support Worker program, or Health Care Aide.
  • Nursing students who completed their first year are eligible to apply.
  • Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) are encouraged to apply.
  • Must hold a First Aid Certificate or CPR level C Certificate.
  • Experience in household management and working with elderly, ill individuals, or children.

Skill Requirements:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective communication with clients and families showing respect and empathy.
  • Good assessment skills.
  • Familiarity with community resources.
  • Ability to work in a team or independently.
  • Ability to follow directions.
  • Adaptability to different environments.
  • Capacity for strict confidentiality.

Other:

  • Must have a personal vehicle and a valid driver's license with insurance.
  • Must undergo a Criminal Records Check.
  • Availability for flexible hours.
  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities:

  • Attention to detail.

  • Bend, push, pull, grip, reach, kneel, crouch with good body mechanics.
