CBC is currently seeking an Associate Producer, Digital to work for CBC Books to work on the editorial team for its portfolio of projects.

CBC Books connects Canadians with books, encouraging a shared love of reading and writing through , Canada Reads , the CBC Literary Prizes and audio programming.

Reporting to the Senior Producer, the Associate Producer works on CBC Books' digital editorial: conceiving, pitching, writing and packaging news stories, reading lists and feature articles, both original and based on social media and audio stories.

You have a keen sense of what works online, from inclusion of photos and videos in stories, to writing strong headlines and leads. You have an audience-first mindset and are willing to adapt and try new things to find success with online storytelling. You respect metrics and use them to inform the kinds of stories you pitch, and how to package and promote them. You are mindful of ensuring that the content on our channels reflects and appeals to many different kinds of readers and the communities they represent.

You are a team player, and someone who is open to feedback and development on the job. You bring a unique perspective to the CBC Books team and are an avid reader. CBC Books is a multi-platform, collaborative environment, one where producers are encouraged to follow their curiosity and learn on the job. While this position will primarily focus on digital editorial, there will be an opportunity to contribute to social and audio stories as well.

Key tasks

Under the direction of the Senior Producer:
  • Covers breaking news in the books, literature and publishing industries
  • Chases guests, authors and experts and interviews them for stories
  • Conceives, contributes to and packages reading lists and feature stories
  • Contributes to, writes and packages features based on CBC Books' audio and social media content
  • Participates in story idea generation for all CBC Books platforms: audio, digital and socia
  • Covers awards and festivals live, on social and digital
  • Collaborates with social and audio teams from the pitch process to final delivery to ensure a multi-platform storytelling experience
Qualifications

You possess the following:
  • Journalism experience, including chasing, writing and packaging stories for online
  • Demonstrated writing, editorial and digital packaging skills
  • A love of books and reading. Knowledge of the Canadian publishing industry is an asset
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity, with connections to diverse communities
  • Experience with content management systems. Experience with 9CMS or Polopoly is an asset
  • Experience with photo research and editing. Experience with Canva or Photoshop is an asset
  • Experience with video editing. Experience with Adobe Premiere is an asset
  • Experience with audio editing. Experience with Dalet is an asset
  • Excellent proofreading skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing work patterns, processes and methods
  • Independent and self-motivated, with strong interpersonal skills
  • Openness to feedback and commitment to continuous learning and personal growth
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, overtime and weekends as required
  • Knowledge of CBC's best practices, including the JSP and language guide, is an asset.
