Newcomer Connections is a crucial pillar within the YMCA family. Established in 1993, Y Newcomer Connections is a leading immigrant settlement centre focused on creating connections that will transform our community into a lasting, healthy home for immigrants from around the world and from all walks of life.

The Opportunity

The Newcomer Youth Advisor provides extracurricular support to newcomer youth ages This position plans and delivers Newcomer Youth Programming, prioritizing leadership development and exposure to Canadian sports and outdoor pursuits. This position works closely with School Coordinators/Settlement Workers in Schools and other YMCA program staff to develop relevant, timely programming and ensure newcomer youth receive 360-degree support. This position reports to the Settlement Supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver Newcomer Youth Programming for youth ages 12-14 and 15-19;
  • Collaborate with YMCA staff to develop programming relating to youth leadership, Canadian sports and outdoor pursuits;
  • Collaborate with YMCA staff to recruit and train volunteers to serve as Program mentors;
  • Collaborate with the Intercultural Competency Trainer to provide necessary staff and community support respecting cultural awareness and inclusion;
  • Lead by example and provide strong mentorship and social support to newcomer youth;
  • Work to build relationships, trust and confidence among newcomer parents;
  • Bring forward unique or tough challenges to the attention of staff on other service delivery teams as relevant;
  • Connect newcomer youth with extracurricular activities, volunteer opportunities and employment support in the community;
  • Support efforts to develop further youth programming across the YMCA, as requested by the General Manager of Newcomer & Community Connections;
  • Make and support referrals to internal and external community opportunities and events for youth (i.e. Camp Glenburn, Skills Launch, Imagine NB, Salvation Army Kettle Campaign, etc.);
  • Collaborate with the YMCA Youth Council to connect newcomer youth with others from across the community;
  • In the spring, support School Coordinators / Settlement Workers in Schools to coordinate child care/summer camp activities;
  • Understand, promote, support and leverage the YMCA Strong Communities Campaign on behalf of newcomer youth;
  • Understand and leverage P.R.O. Kids funding on behalf of ;
  • Maintain frequent, accurate data entry in the iCARE database, CRM and other reporting tools;
  • Complete regular reports;
  • Complete monthly expenses;
  • Attend staff meetings;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the G.M. of Newcomer & Community Connections.G.M.Skills and Qualifications.
  • A Bachelor's Degree, Community College diploma or similar from an accredited institution
  • Approachable and possessing a solid client-centric attitude
  • Heightened sensitivity to the needs of our immigrant community
  • Exceptional ability to communicate in English with clients whose first language is not English
  • A minimum of 3 years work experience in a cross-cultural environment
  • Demonstrated interest or experience working with youth
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Outstanding organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including 2-3 evenings/week
  • Must be fluent in English; knowledge of other languages is a great asset.
  • Employment is contingent on having a clean Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.
