Position Overview

The Department of Family Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Project Coordinator. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator.

This position will be primarily for coordinating community-based research projects, with primary responsibility for CanTreatCOVID Trial activities in Alberta. CanTreatCOVID is an adaptive platform trial evaluating treatments for COVID in non-hospitalized patients. This project will result in national adaptive platform trial infrastructure beyond the COVID-19 pandemic, for influenza and other upper respiratory pathogens, and build capacity to efficiently study therapeutics for other diseases.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Successfully manage, monitor and report all phases of the project life-cycle including scope, timelines, costs, issues, risk management, change management, quality and resource management
  • Develop and negotiate research agreements and strategic alliances with outside parties
  • Update the PI and study team on clinical trials activities including administrative, protocol-related, data management, quality and regulatory issues Liaise with investigators, administrative staff, sponsors, and clinical trials staff and develop excellent communication strategies
  • Support initiation and development of research proposals and protocols and coordinate research grant process
  • Oversee financial management of the project
  • Chair research group meetings
  • Work with project partners to ensure that protocols are implemented as planned – this may include developing process flow charts, recruitment materials, and being a member of joint steering committees
  • Provide in-scope supervision to junior research staff, including tracking tasks and activities, advising on technical aspects of tasks (i.e., scientific writing and data analysis), and providing the Principal Investigator with regular updates regarding team activities
  • Work independently, taking initiative in defining work needs and priorities and work as part of a team to manage multidisciplinary projects with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Assist with the management of resources to support the development of the project
  • Develop and implement project tools and templates
  • Review literature, research findings, and epidemiologic research for projects
  • Assist with grant applications, writing project reports, technical research reports, status reports
  • Synthesize and create draft documents taken from secondary sources of information
  • Support research and community stakeholders with resources and training applicable to the research protocol
  • Work with project staff and stakeholders to design, develop and disseminate project applicable communications, presentations, publications and research findings
  • Liaise and communicate with key stakeholder groups to promote awareness of the project
  • Maintain accurate, timely, complete documentation and records
  • Ensure required contracts, confidentiality agreements, ethics approvals and privacy impact assessments are in place where appropriate and support the needs and requirements of data partners, as they relate to the data partnership agreements

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Higher degree in a health research discipline or extensive experience required
  • A minimum of 4-6 years of progressive work experience related to the primary purpose of the position. A combination of experience and skills will be considered
  • Substantial experience in clinical trials required
  • Project co-ordination and staff or student supervisory experience required
  • Excellent communication through written and verbal means is necessary
  • Knowledge of Alberta's health system is an asset
  • Experience with the University's systems, including financial reporting, OnCore CTS, IRISS and REDCap is a strong asset
  • Prior training and experience in clinical trials compliance is required
  • Project management experience including project definition and planning, risk assessment, change management, project control and execution and project budgeting
  • Understanding of community based health care organizations is an asset
  • Strong analytical, communication and interpersonal skills are required
  • The incumbent must be able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and work with individuals and groups from across the University and community. There are sometimes conflicting deadlines to manage, so flexibility and composure are required
  • Must work well under pressure and be able to communicate effectively with all levels of the institution and with external stakeholders
  • Maintains the highest level of discretion, integrity and trust in all dealings
  • Excellent professionalism, diplomacy and a high degree of confidentiality
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
