Wind Technician, Wind Operations

TransAlta is seeking a skilled Wind Technician to join their team at the Pincher Creek Asset. As a key member of the operations team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the Cowley North and Summerview 1 wind assets.

About the Role

  • Develop and implement operations and maintenance strategies to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and optimize performance.
  • Provide leadership and direction to a team of wind technicians and contractors to achieve business results and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure operational compliance with EHS, NERC, OHS, and other relevant standards through daily review of work orders and monitoring of facility metrics.
  • Drive results in safety, compliance, plant availability, and cost through technical support and assistance to wind technicians.
  • Support the Supervisor in selecting, developing, and managing a high-performance team of employees and contractors.
  • Identify and mitigate risks that could negatively impact business results and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Establish a collaborative work environment and deliver after-hours support as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure optimal performance through daily work scheduling, planning, and implementation of maintenance, service, and repair of wind turbine equipment.
  • Support the daily to three-month business plan in alignment with the Supervisor's business plan.
  • Monitor, analyze, and forecast operations performance.
  • Identify and implement business and productivity improvement initiatives.
  • Capture and apply lessons learned.
  • Coach and mentor team members.
  • Build, engage, lead, and motivate cross-functional teams.
  • Set priorities for and coach team members to meet agreed deliverables.
  • Stay calm under pressure and make hard decisions while maintaining respect of others.
  • Collaborate with peers and engage cross-functional support to establish business plans and achieve business results.
  • Communicate and convey ideas and information in a way that brings about understanding, commitment, and results.

Requirements

  • Appropriate trade certification in a related discipline with years of related progressive experience.
  • Preference for Vestas Wind Turbine (V80) experience of 4 years or more, or related experience.
  • Comprehensive understanding of concepts and principles within own discipline and knowledge of others.
  • Thorough understanding of the operational aspects of the plant - technical, compliance, and financial.
  • Plant risk and related mitigation strategies.
  • Understanding of site contractual obligations, procurement processes, and vendor qualifications.
  • Strong understanding of how related teams coordinate their efforts and resources to achieve objectives.
