The Ministry of the Solicitor General, Ontario Provincial Police, and the North West Region Command is seeking a qualified individual to join our Forensic Identification Services Unit.

In this exciting, rewarding and challenging opportunity, you will provide specialized investigative support services to uniform members, Ontario municipal police services and government ministries dealing with investigations involving digital evidence.

DF assists with the identification, preservation, recovery, and analysis of digital evidence acquired from electronic devices.


As mandated, Digital Forensic Analysts are required to provide investigative support services by identifying, collecting, preserving, analyzing, validating, reporting, and presenting digital evidence from electronic devices capable of storing and transmitting data.

The Forensic Identification Services (FIS) includes thirteen (13) deployed Forensic Identification Services units throughout the province and includes Forensic Identification Support Services (FISS) at OPP General Headquarters (GHQ).

FIS co-ordinates all provincial forensic identification services including the Scenes of Crimes Officer (SOCO) program.

What can I expect to do in this role?1. Conduct digital forensic analysis of electronic devices as an investigative support service for specialized investigative units, detachments, and regions within the Ontario Provincial Police and for municipal services within the Province of Ontario.

  • Obtain Special Constable status and assist with the execution of Criminal Code Search Warrants. DF Analysts are required to deploy within the Province of Ontario to assist with identifying, collecting, preserving, analyzing, and documenting digital evidence on-scene.
  • Utilize digital forensic software, hardware, and techniques to acquire and analyze electronic devices capable of storing and transmitting data. The scope of forensic analysis of data includes, but is not limited to, video forensics, computer forensics, mobile forensics, vehicle forensics, cloud forensics, and any analysis of a device that constitutes a computer system as defined in section of the Criminal Code of Canada.
  • Adhere to digital forensic best practices to ensure evidence continuity and forensic soundness.
  • Maintain forensic software, hardware, and general equipment assigned individually and shared collectively.
  • Conduct forensic acquisitions, cursory forensic analysis, create investigative review packages, and consult with investigators and Crown Attorneys as required.
  • Conduct comprehensive forensic analysis, prepare detailed forensic reports for court disclosure, testify and provide expert opinion for court proceedings.
  • Participate in weekly team meetings, provide recommendations within unit-based committees, and assist with preparing business cases to acquire new equipment and training per Ministry and OPP guidelines and policies. Provide subject matter expertise for internal and external stakeholders by way of consultations or training, as directed.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.
How do I qualify?Mandatory

  • Ability to pass an OPP background/ security investigation.
  • Successfully complete the Digital Forensics Understudy Program and other mandatory OPP training as required.
  • Valid Ontario Driver's Licence.
  • Obtain Special Constable status.
  • Ability to work on a regularly scheduled on-call basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Federal and provincial statutes and case law relevant to acquiring and analyzing digital evidence, scope and limitations of search authorizations, and court disclosure requirements.
  • Knowledge of electronic devices capable of storing and transmitting data, such as computer systems, mobile devices, digital video recorders, various external storage mediums, vehicle infotainment systems, Internet of Things devices, cloud storage solutions, video game consoles, etc.
  • Knowledge of forensic acquisition processes and methodology to acquire, preserve, and assure continuity of digital evidence.
  • Knowledge of forensic analysis and reporting to advance investigations and fulfill court requirements through disclosing inculpatory and exculpatory evidence.
  • Knowledge of forensic software and techniques to parse, carve, and validate findings as it is relevant to the fields of video forensics, computer forensics, mobile forensics, vehicle forensics, cloud forensics, and any analysis of a device that constitutes a computer system as defined in section of the Criminal Code of Canada.
  • Knowledge of Office-related software, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, TechSmith Snagit, etc.
  • Ability to research, develop, and implement solutions in all areas of digital forensics.
  • Ability to isolate relevant evidentiary forensic artifacts from within large volumes of data, assemble them within the context of an investigation and articulate their cohesive meaning and relevance to the matter being investigated.
  • Oral communication skills and interpersonal skills to liaise with a diverse group of OPP staff, law enforcement agencies and crown attorneys, provide technical advice and support, communicate complex technical information and system capabilities, and deliver presentations/ lectures.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Analytical, problem-solving, and evaluative skills to conduct forensics investigations including the extraction, examination, and analysis of electronic data.
