Your role

This is a full time temporary, weekends (Saturday and Sunday) opportunity.

Selects CBC assigned stories and writes material for presentation online primarily for regional websites. Demonstrates and maintains exceptional skill in writing, editing and packaging for online. Work is governed by and adheres to CBC journalistic and programming policies, standards and practices. Editorial leadership provides guidance, but initiative and independent judgment are expected. Close co-operation with newsgathering and the program unit is essential.

You will play an integral role in the Local Services strategy with a focus on three priorities:

Content: In this role, you will ensure that all CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, immediate and resonate with the communities we serve. You will further our original, enterprise and investigative storytelling and ensure we are talking about what matters most to people throughout Winnipeg and the rest of the province. You're innovative and will try new things, new workflows and new story treatments. You inspire others to do the same.

Community: As the industry shifts, local news and community storytelling is more important than ever. You will understand the diverse and changing population in Manitoba and the importance of reflecting all our communities in our content.

Culture: You live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.

Key Tasks:
  • Writes, edits, packages and publishes digital content in a clear and concise manner.
  • Pitches original and community stories. -Curates the regional landing page.
  • Ensures the website and stories adhere to the priorities of the day.
  • Gathers and reports information from various sources.
  • Re-writes material as necessary to make it more relevant to the platform.
  • Selects/takes photos and video/audio clips to accompany online stories.
  • Critically edits material written by others and/or items produced by others.
  • Writes articles and headlines from information provided by reporters, wire copy or original sources.
  • Contributes and pitches ideas or program content; participates in the preparation of program objectives for both local and national pages.
  • Liaises with other staff to ensure required material is available. -Publishes CBC material on social media and other platforms.
  • Co-ordinates the creation of interactive content.
We are looking for a candidate with the following:
  • A university degree or equivalent preferred
  • Three to five years of online and digital news media preferred
  • Must possess a valid driver's licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/RadioCanada's insurance company.
  • Story-teller with a strong demonstrated connection to the diversity of Winnipeg and Manitoba
  • Proven ability to work in diverse teams
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Advanced knowledge of web, mobile and social media tools and industry trends
  • Ability to generate original, enterprise journalism
  • High energy and enthusiasm towards journalism
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts including early starts, late finishes and weekends
