Main Responsibilities

Safety Officers use their knowledge and skills to promote a positive health and safety culture in the workplace. They assist in the implementation, monitoring and review of protective and preventive safety measures along with ensuring that safety policies and practices that are adopted are adhered to.

  • Provide safety oversight to active deicing operations on site ;
  • Carrying out regular site inspections to check policies and procedures are being properly implemented;
    • Recommending changes to work practices that are safe and comply with legislation;
  • Facilitate training as required with managers and employees about health and safety issues and risks;
  • Intervening, correcting and coaching individuals when unsafe behaviours/practices are identified;
  • Keeping records of inspection findings;
  • Recording of incidents and accidents;
  • Familiarization with new policies/procedures;
  • Ensuring the safe operation of equipment;
  • Other duties as required.

Safety Policies

  • Implements and enforces safety policies assisting in the reduction of employee injuries, accidents and incidents. The safety lead solicits input from managers and employees. The safety officer alerts employees about policy changes and monitor compliance.

Workplace Inspections

  • Inspects interior and exterior work areas to determine if there are any safety hazards. The lead also observes employees to ensure compliance of company safety policies.

Accident Investigations

  • Assists in an investigation to determine why the accident happened. The officer may question witnesses, inspect the accident scene, and take pictures of any property damage.
  • Training and Coaching
  • Assist in development and delivery of appropriate training programs.

Required Skills

Candidates will need to show evidence of the following:

  • A minimum of two (2) years of deicing operations and/or communications experience (health and safety experience will be an asset);
  • Familiar with SMS program;
  • Excellent written (documentation ) and spoken communication skills in order to explain health and safety processes to a wide range of people and to give feedback to individuals/groups;
  • Able to work in collaboration with other safety leads and in sharing good practices (cGMP);
  • Maintain safety standards that may impact speed or efficiency in the organization;
  • Excellent attendance and job performance with no disciplinary action in the preceding 12 months.
