The Ministry of the Solicitor General, Ontario Provincial Police, and North East Region are seeking a qualified individuals to join our team.

In this exciting, rewarding and challenging opportunity, you will maintain the safe and secure custody and control of offenders being transported between detention/correctional and mental health institutions and court locations, and to ensure the proper working order of security and restraining equipment and OPP vehicles used in the performance of duties.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is one of North America's largest deployed police services with more than 5,800 uniformed officers, 2,400 civilian employees and 830 Auxiliary officers.

James Bay Detachments, with a total area of responsibility of approximately 250,000 square kilometers, is geographically the largest detachment within the OPP.

The Detachment area is comprised of one administrative centre located in Kapuskasing and three
satellite detachments located in Moosonee, Cochrane and Hearst; James Bay Detachment is the largest detachment within North East Region.

The Detachment also serves multiple Provincial Parks, several hundred kilometers of provincial highways and various smaller municipalities along the Highway 11 corridor including, Fauquier- Strickland, Moonbeam, Opasatika, Val Rita-Harty, Smooth Rock Falls and Mattice-Val Cote.

The Detachment serves a total population of approximately 30,000.


The South Porcupine Detachment is situated within the City of Timmins in the District of Cochrane and is responsible for policing a combined population of approximately 10,000 residents.

The detachment's administrative center is located in South Porcupine with satellite locations in Black River-Matheson and Iroquois Falls. Our service delivery area is comprised of two incorporated municipalities (Black River-Matheson and Iroquois Falls). It also contains the unincorporated areas of Gogama and several small communities along Highway 560.

We provide support to two First Nation communities that are policed by the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service (NAPS):
Mattagami First Nation and Wahgoshig First Nation.

What can I expect to do in this role?To maintain the safe and secure custody and control of offenders being transported between detention/correctional and mental health institutions and court locations, and to ensure the proper working order of security and restraining equipment and OPP vehicles used in the performance of duties.

How do I qualify?Mandatory

  • Ability to pass an OPP background/ security investigation; including psychological assessment.
  • Certification in emergency first aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Heartsaver Certificate (CPR) in order to administer first aid to offenders; must maintain training and certification.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class G Driver's licence for the purpose of transporting offenders.
  • Must meet requirements of basic physical fitness testing and maintain basic level of fitness to provide required safety and security services.
  • Ability to pass and maintain ongoing certification in Use of Force.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Special Constable status.
  • Ability to work shifts and weekends.


NOTE:

Unless you are a current Offender Transportation Officer you are required to attach; proof of First Aid and CPR Level "C" and a current Drivers Abstract (no older than one month prior to initial job posting date) with your resume.

The identified successful candidate will need to participate in and successfully complete mandatory Special Constable training and appointment.

Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of relevant sections of legislation, including Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act, Ministry of Correctional Services Act, Human Rights Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act. Knowledge of the Respectful Workplace Policy to support a respectful workplace, to prevent workplace harassment, violence and discrimination and to model respectful and professional behaviours as a member of the Offender Transport Program.

Knowledge of secure handling of weapons and contraband to properly handle such items found on offenders. Knowledge of inmate sub-culture and prisoner jargon to understand offenders when observing and communicating with them during transport.


Knowledge of traffic laws of Ontario, basic vehicle maintenance and safety, and standard transport vehicle safety checks, e.g., tires, lights, safety equipment to ensure the safe transportation of offenders in OPP vehicles.

Interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Ability to work in a team environment.


Problem solving and evaluative skills to co-ordinate pick-ups/deliveries and respond to medical emergencies and situations involving injury, disruptive behaviour and non-compliance with rules, which interferes with maintaining transportation schedule.


Ability to meet requirements of basic physical fitness testing and maintain basic level of fitness to provide required safety and security services.
