We're seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Associate Physician to join our team in the Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiac Surgery. As an Associate Physician, you will work under the supervision of a fully licensed physician to provide medical care to patients. About the OpportunityAs an Associate Physician, you will be responsible for:
- Providing medical care to patients under the supervision of a fully licensed physician
- Assisting at surgical procedures and performing appropriate portions of the procedure within the scope of your demonstrated competence
- Working with attending staff, nurses, and Residents, and other members of the health care team in the development of the overall patient care program
- Communicating with patients, families, referring, and family physicians concerning patient management plans
- Performing and documenting admission history and physical examinations, progress notes, discharge summaries, death certificates, etc.
- Managing the day-to-day care of patients, including writing medical orders on charts and responding to emergencies, in consultation with attending staff
- Performing procedures within the scope of your demonstrated competence, including insertion of peripheral intravenous lines, initiation of intravenous medication, taking blood samples for diagnostic purposes or arterial blood gases, insertion of Foley catheters, insertion and removal of intra-aortic balloon pumps, insertion of central lines, arterial lines, insertion and removal of chest tubes, intubation and management of ventilation, adjustment of inotropes and vasopressors
- Arranging consultations with other departments for care and investigation
- Following through on investigations and arranging follow-up outpatient visits
- Being recertified for procedures within the scope of your demonstrated competencies
- Attending educational sessions and rounds as time permits
- Interacting with and orientating clinical clerks and PGY1's, new to the Cardiac Surgery Service
- Participating in on-call responsibilities of the service, including consultations
We're looking for a highly skilled and dedicated individual who meets the following requirements:
- Must meet the requirements to obtain a Clinical Assistant License from The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia
- Must have obtained (in writing) Review of Qualifications from The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia prior to application deadline
- CMPA coverage required
- ACLS certification required
- Good command of written and spoken English
- Must be able to promote and maintain good interpersonal skills
- Completion of the equivalence of a rotating internship and postgraduate training and experience in Neurosurgery are considered assets
- Physical demand - Must be able to sit, stand, walk and perform duties as outlined above
- Mental and Visual demand - High; must be able to deal with stressful situations
- Competencies in other languages an asset; French preferred
