JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for providing support and assistance to the Starter in managing start gate crew and determining entry sequence into starting gate by directing riders and other track personnel to get horses into position.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Act as a back up to Starter.
  • Overall supervision of start gate crew including scheduling, discipline and adherence to policies, safety regulations and union contract as well as payroll, vacation, staff, training and equipment and service requirements.
  • Assist in scheduling morning workouts for horses requiring familiarization with starting gate procedures and provide support in evaluating performance and training record of horses to determine entry sequence.
  • Provide direction to track personnel to assist rider into starting gate when horses refuse to enter the gate, makes recommendations to the Starter (or in the absence of the Starter, VP) removal of horse unfit to start race, and ensure that all horses have a fair start and that the race is on time.
  • Maintain positive relationships with horsemen and other racing related personnel.
  • In the absence of the Starter, implement organizational and HR policies as well as clear and effective work procedures.
  • Work with Race Office on various projects as required.

Knowledge

  • General knowledge of horse handling procedures
  • General knowledge of horse racing industry, rules and regulations
  • General knowledge of union contracts and human relations
  • General knowledge of starting gate equipment and related issues

Skills

  • General interpersonal, communication, organizational, leadership and management

Education and Experience

  • Secondary school education
  • Licensed by the Ontario Racing Commission
  • 2-5 years previous experience in a similar environment
  • Experience supervising staff

Working Conditions

  • Exposure to external weather conditions, dust, noise
  • High risk of injury due to unpredictable horse behaviors
