Environmental Health Officer Job Description

Support Health Promotion & Protection Services in Burnaby, B.C. as a Casual Environmental Health Officer, promoting public health and environmental control standards.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Investigate public health-related problems and environmental control matters, issue orders and recommendations as required.
  • Inspect food processing and handling establishments, business premises, and buildings to ensure compliance with regulations and standards.
  • Perform inspectional, regulatory, and enforcement duties on water quality and other environmental and pollution control matters.
  • Conduct epidemiological investigations into foodborne illness outbreaks, communicable diseases, and other health hazards.
  • Participate in pest management control and continuous quality improvement activities.
  • Prepare reports on investigational and inspectional work, collect and analyze data, and make recommendations for improved standards and controls.
  • Provide consultation, education, and technical support to clients, including the general public, private industry, and government agencies.
  • Review and assess plans for facility operation or construction, making recommendations for building permit and business license issuance.
  • Facilitate community engagement and capacity building to promote positive change in the environment and population health.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Technology in Environmental Health degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Certificate in Public Health Inspection (Canada) granted by the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI).
  • Valid BC Class V Driver's License and possession of a personal vehicle.
