Pharmacy Technician Job Description

Seeking a detail-oriented Pharmacy Technician to process medication orders, prepare prescriptions, and maintain accurate records in a fast-paced healthcare environment.


Job Highlights:
  • Process clinically reviewed and approved medication orders for distribution to patients, clients, or residents.
  • Prepare and process prescriptions by entering orders, counting, measuring, packaging, or re-packaging medications and compounding sterile pharmaceutical products.
  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of dispensed prescriptions prepared by self or others by verifying order entries and/or performing the final check of dispensed prescriptions.
  • Enter and ensure the accuracy and completeness of drug and personal health information in the pharmacy information system.
  • Transfer prescriptions to and receive prescriptions from other pharmacies.
  • Maintain accurate records, including medication verification and quality assurance checks.
  • Distribute medications and maintain relevant inventory, wardstock, and narcotic records.
  • Maintain department work areas by ensuring tidiness and order.
  • Perform related clerical duties, such as keyboarding, answering telephone, filing, and maintaining medication and prescription records.

Responsibilities:
  1. Process clinically reviewed and approved medication orders for distribution to patients, clients, or residents.
  2. Receive prescriptions (verbal and non-verbal) from practitioners and ensure that prescriptions are complete and authentic.
  3. Prepare and process prescriptions by performing duties such as entering orders, counting, measuring, packaging, or re-packaging medications and compounding sterile pharmaceutical products.
  4. Ensure the accuracy and completeness of dispensed prescriptions prepared by self or others by verifying order entries and/or performing the final check of dispensed prescriptions.
  5. Process prescriptions for temporary inpatient leave of absence by reviewing, translating, and converting existing inpatient medication orders previously reviewed and approved by a pharmacist.
  6. Enter and ensure the accuracy and completeness of drug and personal health information in the pharmacy information system.
  7. Transfer prescriptions to and receive prescriptions from other pharmacies.
  8. Maintain accurate records, including medication verification and quality assurance checks.
  9. Distribute medications and maintain relevant inventory, wardstock, and narcotic records.
  10. Maintain department work areas by ensuring tidiness and order.
  11. Perform related clerical duties, such as keyboarding, answering telephone, filing, and maintaining medication and prescription records.

Qualifications:
  • Grade 12 and graduation from an accredited Pharmacy Technician program or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Current practicing registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the College of Pharmacists of British Columbia.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to keyboard.
  • Ability to organize work.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
