The incumbent is responsible as a group/work leader. They are responsible for providing direction and checking results, but generally works along with those supervised. The incumbent supervises full-time, part-time, and/or casual/relief employees across multiple departments during the shift. They have input and may participate in the hiring, orientating, evaluating, and disciplining of staff. This is a roving/floating position between 5 locations, Ellen Osler Home, Halton Lighthouse Shelter, Hamilton Booth Centre, Brantford Booth Centre, and Brantford Housing Resource Centre

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Service Responsibilities

  • Serve actively as a member of the management team for the Brantford Booth Centre.
  • Provide oversight and supervision of Social Service Staff and the day-to-day operations in accordance with the mission and values of The Salvation Army.
  • Ensure that duties assigned are completed in an appropriate, safe, and efficient manner by the completion of their respective shifts.
  • Has input and may participate in the hiring, orientating, evaluating, and disciplining of staff.
  • During shift, provide support and supervision of staff and assist with crisis intervention, diffusing conflict and problem solving as required to ensure the safety of residents and staff; responds initially to resident grievances.
  • Responsible for completing the scheduling of staff to ensure coverage for all vacant shifts, including sick relief, stat and vacation coverage.
  • Provide direction and support services to staff as required.
  • Participate in daily shift changes to ensure proper transmission of information from shift to another.
  • Monitor and check logs to ensure the completion of regular security checks.
  • Provide statistical and evaluative information to management when required.
  • May provide back up support to and or assume functions at front desk area or other program areas as needed.
  • Identify staff training requirements and make recommendations regarding staff development for those supervised.
  • Conduct yearly visits to local federal institutions, interview potential clients and initiate intake.
  • Conduct reviews of client files provided by CSC and attend CAT meetings before accepting clients to the Booth Centre.

Health and Safety

  • Responsible to work in compliance with the Ontario Health & Safety Acts and Regulations.
  • Responsible to work in a manner as required by the employer and use the prescribed safety equipment.
  • In consultation with the Executive Director, provide oversight to WSIB claims and other health and safety matters as required within applicable departments, including supervision of the Early and Safe Return to Work Program.
  • Ensure that proper procedures are followed in the event of a workplace injury or illness, conducting incident investigations when required.
  • Participate in all Health & Safety related accidents and injury investigations.

Organizational Responsibilities

  • Develop an understanding of the Mission of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Maintain information in confidence as required.
  • Participate as an active and responsible team member in all work groups through which position responsibilities are achieved.
  • Comply with all City of Brantford standards and contractual agreements.
  • Assist the Executive Director in scheduling and chairing staff meetings.
  • Represent the organization in a professional and engaging manner.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Lead by example, by demonstrating a positive attitude, a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and be flexible in the face of change.
  • Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
  • Participate in supervision and performance appraisal process.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and training.
  • Ensure that staff are aware of emergency procedures and are prepared to implement them immediately as necessary.
  • Act in the best interest of the employer at all times.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This is a temporary full-time position. Flexibility in scheduling is required. The work schedule is determined in consultation with your supervisor and may vary according to requirements of responsibility.

  • May work with potentially aggressive clients.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Completed an Undergraduate University degree in a related field.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification and CPR/First Aid Certification would be an asset or willing to obtain.
  • Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License, own vehicle and insurance required. Must provide an original copy of current driver's abstract that it satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience, including experience in a residential setting, experience in supervision, leadership, coaching, and motivating staff and working with marginalized clientele.
  • Working knowledge of issues pertaining to homeless Individuals and persons on parole.
  • Experience and working knowledge of the Homeless Individuals and Families Information System.
  • Working in a non-profit and unionized environment is an asset.
  • Experience working with a diverse population and an ability to demonstrate a supportive, respectful, and non-judgmental approach to clients.
  • Knowledge of and proven ability in linking with community resources.

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Strong computer skills including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to lead coach and motivate staff.
  • Effectively interact with managers and staff to create a work environment that is positive and mutually supportive.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently, when necessary, with minimal supervision.
  • Must have strong organization and planning skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and disciplined.
  • Ability to lift/move 20 lbs.
  • Effective interpersonal skills; ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines; ability to develop and maintain a team environment.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
