Position Details Position Information Position Title Academic PhD Researcher Posting Number F613P Type of position Limited Term Department/Unit Critical Care Location Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada About the opportunity The Department of Critical Care is looking for a fulltime academic researcher, at the Assistant Professor level, to develop or continue one's own program of critical care medicine research that complements the department's strategic goals and growth. Reporting to the Critical Care Research Director, the Academic Researcher will participate collaboratively as a research team member while offering mentorship and supervision to junior research staff.

Core Responsibilities

The Academic Researcher will be responsible for the following:

  1. Strategic Planning: play an integral role in developing, implementing, iteratively refining, and assessing a departmental research strategy in collaboration with the Research Director, Research Committee, and members of the department more broadly.
  2. Independent Research Program: develop and lead a rich independent program of research that is complementary to existing research programs in the department. The successful candidate will seek external and internal multi-year funding opportunities for continuous growth of their research portfolio. Within their research program, the successful candidate will seek to collaborate with department members and critical care researchers at other institutions and within different research networks to broaden the departments overall collaborative capacity. Presentation at national and international conferences will be expected as well as publication in high-impact peer reviewed journals. Build relationships nationally through representation at Canadian Critical Care Trials Group and within research networks.
  3. Methodological Expertise: bring significant specialized training in any of observational and experimental quantitative research, qualitative study designs, and mixed methods studies, to consult with department members on the design, development, and conduction of other research programs in the department.
  4. Mentorship and Supervision: work closely with department members in a mentor-mentee relationship to develop broad and complementary research programs to serve to grow a unified research program across all departmental sites. The successful candidate will supervise and successfully graduate Research in Medicine, Master's, and Doctoral students, and they will co-supervise Post-doctoral Fellows and Clinician Investigator Program students. The successful candidate will also serve on thesis committees of Master's and Doctoral students within the Faculty of Medicine more broadly.
  5. Teaching and Committee Representation: develop and conduct formal teaching opportunities in the department to grow internal research capacity. The successful candidate will serve on department, faculty, and institutional committees as necessary to represent the department's research infrastructure.

Qualifications & Experience
  • PhD in a related discipline, the PhD must be completed by the position start date
  • Background in epidemiology an asset
  • Evidence of high-quality scholarly output and a strong independent research plan aligned with critical care research
  • Excellent qualifications for research and teaching in graduate and undergraduate programs
  • Publications in high-impact peer reviewed journals
  • Evidence of or a willingness to collaborate across research disciplines, and other faculties within Dalhousie University
